Kansas State Bakery Science. Enough said :)

Have career discussions early and often. (9th grade or earlier) Keep repeating until you find a major your kid things he/she could do and has some prospect for financial reward and stability down the road. Take HS classes related and see how kid does. Repeat until the kid finds something on their own that both of you can live with (sorry, majoring in Southern Cooking with a minor in Cosmetology was not quite my idea) and see how it goes. Make sure you match this with kid’s abilities, academic and otherwise.

I lucked out with first kid - architecture was a no brainer. By 9th grade we knew it was that and she took every art / design / construction / building class the school offered. Now a college junior with a stellar GPA and plans for a doctorate. Plan B was Southern Cooking with a minor in Cosmetology, judging from her newly found cooking skills and cosmetics bills, she’s likely double majoring…

Second kid is a mystery. Ace student but likes to explore. I could see her going the medical / research route or law route if she could get into a T14. Hopefully by visiting some pretty hoity toity LAC’s or privates with equally good med/law she may find her way (say, Emory, Vanderbilt, Tulane…). Disappointed that ‘College Student’ is not a major :)
