Advice on Letters of Rec

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently begun working on college applications and I’m a little stuck on which teachers to choose for letters of rec. I’ve heard from many people and read from some colleges that it is recommended to choose a teacher that has taught you in subjects like math, english, etc.

However, I want to know if you guys think it would be ideal for me to ask my band director for a letter of rec. My main reason for this is to highlight my leadership skills since I’ve been in the school’s band for all 4 years and have been a captain since sophomore year. None of my teachers know be better than my band director, and he can definitely vouch for my growth as an individual during my career in high school.

Would it be worthwhile to have my director write a rec letter for this purpose? Or would it still be more ideal for me to stick with the main courses?

Also, I have not decided on a major yet (though I am leaning towards business at this point). Not sure if this will affect the decision much but I feel it is worth mentioning.

It depends on the college (less selective schools may not care as much), but I would say that generally they do want core academic teachers. If schools allow supplemental recs beyond the required recs, you could submit it then.
