Advice on PG year

We are considering a PG year for our son to have one more year of athletics before college as he suffered a season ending injury this year. Does anyone know if schools will still offer significant FA for a good athlete and student for PG year for hockey? Time is of the essence so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If he’s injured and you need FA, you’d better have good tape footage & a strong prognosis for full recovery. Check out the traditional hockey powerhouses; I’d never say never. If he’s a real blue chipper, sure there’s a chance.

Unfortunately no film hardly as he was hurt before new years and we had lots of college coaches set up to come see him in January so we had no need… Would the word of other coaches count for much?

When I was a BS student many moons ago, most all schools with serious hockey programs and PGs would have been receptive. I have not kept up with things in this area. But I would bet you would find a number of schools that would be interested…Good hunting!

First of all, what do we know? At best, we’re just guessing. Having said that, I am guessing he blew out his knee. (I’m a mother of a hockey player and have seen too many this year in older kids). If that is the case, with good medical care and rehab, he can be as good as new, if not better for next year’s season.
In my totally unprofessional opinion, you will be hard pressed to find a top hockey school that will offer $$$ for a place on their team because of fear of the injury and no solid proof of his ability pre injury. So don’t look at just the top schools. Look at other schools with strong hockey teams. Proctor, Holderness, Brewster, Brooks…those schools may be more likely to take a chance on him. And take heart in the fact that most coaches’ ears will perk up when you tell them you’re Canadian. Offer to have his coach speak with them.
I know a hockey kid who blew out his knee at Proctor (during lax) and rehabbed in time for the hockey season. He was recruited and is now playing DIII at a strong school in CT.
Look at Proctor. My son went there. Strong hockey, decent endowment, and home to a bunch of Canadian kids (at least when my son was there).

Good luck. Hope it works out for your son.

Does any one else have any experience with PG years, does not have to be with hockey??? I am most curious to know if there is FA available for PG years.

There is financial aid at all these schools but they are making decisions about all this now. Here is the current RPI rankings in preps school hockey. Most are boarding schools.

One of the Taft Adcoms specifically recruits for Hockey, but don’t know if it’s too late to inquire about PG year. Guess it couldn’t hurt. They’ve got two hockey rinks, one relatively brand new and a kick-A sports facility.

^^True that. Taft must be wanting to move up on this list. Nicest high school hockey rink I’ve ever seen…reminded me a lot of Harvard’s!!!

KUA has a great program and is losing a lot of seniors this year. They’re always looking for new recruits it seems. Good Canadian population as well.
