Advice on recovering from mono

Any updates from the OP?

I would have a hard time trusting my kid to take it easy during a spring break trip with college friends, but I will add – my college kid was diagnosed with mono, apparently 3-4 after he had actually developed it. Within one week after the diagnosis, he felt fine, and two weeks later he was told he was over it by the doctor. He’d been sick for 6 weeks, just didn’t know it for about 4 of them. So, if a student were diagnosed late in the illness, like mine was, a week on the beach might be okay, as long as they really weren’t drinking and running themselves ragged. But again, I’d have a very hard time believing my kid would take it easy as I think the desire to participate would be pretty strong.

Students with mono should do absolutely nothing else but any school work they must do. No ECs, nothing.
I would tell him I would cover the cost of this (or give him $ for a future vacation) and he should stay home and rest rest rest rest rest.

My DD had it as a Junior in HS…she went to school and then came home and rested and did nothing else.

Ask him if this trip is worth it if he ends up having to do the semester over (and he can pay for it).

I agree with nearly everyone and think he should stay home. One of my daughters had mono her senior year of high school right near the end of first semester. She missed a week and half of school in early Dec. and then went very partial days (AP science first period and AP calc last period – came home to sleep in between) until finals. Fortunately, her teachers and guidance counselor were very helpful and understanding, but it was truly awful. She postponed two of her finals until after the holidays. She slept SO much over Christmas break. I feel like she didn’t really bounce back to her usual high-energy self until March! I know mono hits everyone differently, but I can’t imagine how your son would deal with returning to college if he gets even more run down due to the spring break trip. He really needs to rest over spring break.

Just saw this, and no doubt your child’s break has come and gone. Hope he’s over the worst. My two cents is that people underestimate how nasty mono can be. My D was horribly sick with it in her sophomore college year. Luckily, the worst of it was over the Christmas break, but it started right before finals and affected her exam performance. There are some serious side effects, and it remains contagious for quite a while. That should be reason enough for any student to avoid being in close proximity to others.

Chiming in as well. My D16 had mono at the end of April last year, managed to get through finals, drive herself home from school and was down and out until late June. My S19 then got it and was sick the entire summer. I do think both of them had severe cases but even if your son is feeling better, it does linger and the body needs time to heal. I would say “no”.
