So on my first try at the SAT's I got a 2040. I know this isn't a bad score, but I'm 99.99% positive I could do better (I got a 206 and a 211 on PSAT's). I've already registered to retake them on 6/2 but now I'm wondering if I should take SAT II's instead (all of the school's I'm looking at require two) for a change fee of $25.
If I'm looking at MIT/Columbia/Carnegie-Mellon, should I retake for a better score, or take my SAT II's and be done with standardized testing?

Why not take sat II in October?

I wouldn’t want to take SAT II’s in October just in case I apply early or have to retake them.

I’d retake the SAT I. Most people score better the second time, and unless you’re an extremely hooked applicant, a 2040 is pretty low for the schools you’re looking into.

Take your SAT IIs as soon as possible after you’re done with the classes. You can take the SAT whenever you like, but the SAT II requires specific knowledge (unless you’re doing Literature or something).

Edit: Also, a fair amount of schools will accept scores through the fall testing dates for ED appers.

I agree to take SATIIs as soon as finished courses. For my girls it was also right after APs for those classes so not much extra study involved. Most schools take a SAT score from sittings in late fall. Check the individual school. Could possibly take it more than once in fall.
