Advice on Russia!

I am thinking of going this semester, from February to early May, to Russia. I would like to go and learn Russian. I would prefer either Moscow or St. Petersbourg, because they both offer a great hue of things to do; and a marvelous night life.

So far I am consideirng the program that the MGU or Moscow State University offers. Its the cheapest I've found. I will be staying in the student accomodations within the university, and perhaps I'll have the oppportunity to interact with other Russians.

What can you guys tell me on Moscow during Winter/Spring? I heard is beautiful and cold in winter and wet and ugly in spring.

Do you know any other cheap programs? Also, where can I find descent accomodations that is near the university at cheap price?

Finally, what do you have to say on Moscow's nightlife? How outgoing and friendly are Russian folks?

Russian is here. Ok, I don't know anything about this programs, but I can say about Moscow. It's really ugly in early spring, but later it bacame good and pretty. Nightlife is great, but maybe elitar and dangerous sometimes. Folk in Russia is friendly, but no more than that.

Good luck!

Go to St. Petersburg. It is much more beautiful than Moscow. Moscow is the financial capital. St.P. is the cultural. Did you happen to be in Paris? St.P is a lot like Paris. The downtown is small and cosy (i.e. you can get to a lot of places on foot). Also, would have a chance to visit all these awesome cultural attractions.
Moscow is huge, though also nice. It depends on what kind of person you are and what environment you like more.
As for universities - did you check out SPBGY (st. Petersburg state university?)
And, one more thing. If you are interested in Russian culture or politics or whatever social issues - do not go to either of these cities. From Moscow and St.P. your impression about Russia would be TOOO unrealistic.

hy wikki r u going on scholorship or on ur own. what's the admission criteria

Sorry, I hate St.Petersburgh and Paris, but maybe it is right..

Cool, I heard that St. petersburgh is a VERY beautiful city...

I am not going to enroll in any university. Just going to take Russian classes. I want to achieve a good proficiency with the language.

Any suggestions on what to do around for the time being?

What are the good universities in Moscow and St. Petersburg? (especially the latter)
What do they specialize in?

ey Guys! If you're visiting Russia, Wiki, Take a photo at the Red Square and try to keep far from bald guys (they don't like any non-Russians). Moscow is awesome in Winter, but traffic, ice and cold are terrible. But you can visit Tretyakov gallery or Bolshoi Thetre there. Abaout St. Peterburg, well, Russians say that it is a Criminal Capital of Russia. But IT IS very beautiful. Taking classes at MGU would be good, cos there're a lot of internationals (Chinese, especially). Good Luck, there.
Dima, check out:

MGU has a very beautiful campus!

Hey! I think, though St. Petersburgh is very beautiful, you, Wiki, should go in Moscow and try MGU. It is very good university and comparable to HYPM and English univs. Besides, MGU really has much more internationals than St. Pet. univs.

And about bald guys, meder, you're absolutely right.

Yes I will be at MGU for three months taking classes. How is the nightlife in Moscow? Is it expensive? How about face control for the top clubs?

Moscow is the third most expensive city in the world. and Face control is very strict. if you don't seem to have money, they won't let you in...

To tell the truth, wiki, I don't think you should participate in nightlife 1) it is extremely dangerous especially for foreigner 2) yes, it is very expensive.

Aye. Moscow can be quite dangerous. It has a lot of historical sites and such, it's a capital and all the good stuff. I wouldn't say that it's THAT expensive, but then again it depends on your living standards. You know, it's a large city with all the city problems. And it IS dangerous at night.

And have fun learning Russian. It's quite a pain in the neck since it's so different from most languages.

Is Moscow really that much better than St. Petersburg for International students?

If they were pretty much equal I would prefer to go to St. Petersburg, it's where I was born and I have family there.

I would NOT advice any foreigner to study in Moscow - it resembles sticking your head in a lion's jaws!!! Crime rates there are unbelievable!!! Skinheads are jest around the corner ready to cause you harm and stuff like this.
IMHO, a foreigner even with a face of a famous terrorist would feel safe in St. Peterburg =) It is a splendid city with a lot of nice ppl.
A bro of mine has got appearance of a Caucasian - he wouldn't feel grateful to his folks if he lived in Moscow, but he is having fun in St.Peterburg (don't wanna put the evil eye on his luck) =)
So it is up to you to make your decision ;)

Westmonster,

Yes, Skinheads are all around in Moscow, but in St. Petersburgh too. Remember, the most famous and cruel skinheads' crime was the murder of little 9-year foreign girl in St. Petersburgh. So, don't be so one-sided.

Yeah, basically it's not the most foreign-friendly place. ;)

Moscow's crime aint such a big deal. New York is similar, big city with lots of crime rate and tourists could be victimized. However, if I go to Moscow I really want to experience it. I've been in Bogota and Guatemala City, both have an outrageous criminal activity, and I had no problems. I think I wouldn't be able to forgive myself for not experiencing Moscow's nightlife, of course I would try to stick to a group preferably.
