Haavain: Aren’t Harvey Mudd and Pomona liberal arts colleges?

And thank you mom2collegekids; that seems to be the issue…finding a school that is competetive and academically challenging enough to peak my interest but also able to serve as a true safety.

They are, but Harvey Mudd is unique among LACs in that it is almost exclusively science-and-math focused–remember that science is a lib arts field too. And the math there is top-notch.

I suggest applying to Chicago, Georgetown, and UMich EA–if you get into one of them, which I think you will, that school effectively becomes a safety.

The honors college at a public flagship might also be a good safety–honors providing smaller classes and a strong peer group.

What else do you want in a college outside of academics?

A safety school can be challenging in academics if it has a good math program. So, you need to consider which mid-tiers have a strong math program…maybe Purdue???

Would you guys consider Wake Forest as a safety school for me? I feel as though I could certainly get in, but what would your opinions be?

I don’t think Wake is a safety for anyone–a match, maybe.

I agree… i don’t think Wake is a safety…

But, I do think Purdue could be.

Also, UMinn- twin cities

Rutgers

Smaller schools that
–are not LAC’s
–support Cog Sci as well as mathematics
–appear to be sure-bet admissions targets for someone with your statistics

The College of New Jersey
Truman State University
University of Denver

They all have fine general academic reputations, too (the first two especially). Because you did not indicate a geographic preference I have picked from several regions of the country.
