Hello everyone ! I am currently a junior at high school ( international student ) and preparing for the SAT II. One of the SAT II subject tests that I intend to take this Oct or Nov is US History ! As you may know, with international students, sitting for the US History test is a real risk. But I have decided to venture into it. But the troubles are I don't know where to start and what sorts of books are useful :)

So, anyone out there has experience ( esp international students who took the US History test ), please dispense me a few advice and share your experiences with this neophyte :D. I really appreciate your help and suggestions. Thanks in advance ! ;)

I studied with my APUSH review guide for the SAT II. :)

If you pick up any of the US History review guides, such as the Princeton Review one, it'll be a huge help. But from my own experience, the only students to succeed on that exam took the AP course, which was extremely intensive. Good luck!

Oh, thanks you very much guys !
Yeah, US History is fairly difficult, but do you think if I start studying it right away, do I stand any chance of scoring 700+ in the future ? ;)

You still have half a year to study. It's not like I learned much from the lectures my teacher used to give, I only read the review books, and I ended up doing fine.

Personally, I think the US History Sat II is fairly easy. The grading curve allows for you to miss a few questions and still get an 800.

Is it true ? Miss several questions n still have a chance to get an 800 ( like Math II ) ? That's really nice !

So, can anyone suggest me several methods to study US History effectively ? Some advise to use some books like Barron, Kaplan etc to prepare for it, but I am afraid that it isn't sufficient ( This is only sufficient with US students attending AP His course or courses in high schools ... ). In my country, we learn very little about US History, so our general knowledge is fairly limited :( ( let alone in-depth knowledge required for the SAT II :( )
All suggestions are appreciated ! Thankx a bunch ! ;)

bump... I need some help ! ;)

Its incredibly easy. The sat 2 books are way to boring, get the AP one instead (even though it won't go over history from the 80's to the present, which might make you miss about 3 questions). I still got a 780 from the ap book, read it all in about a month. If you really are dedicated, get the sat 2 book. You should also finish the test fairly quickly, taking about 40 minutes if you go slowly.

Oh, thanks so much for your prompt reply ! ;)

But if I want to buy an AP History, what kind of book should I buy ? ( cos I have had a look at Amazon n there are so many many books that I don't have the faintest idea which book is useful :( ). What kind of book did you use when u prepared for the SAT History, neoa1212 ? ;)
Every suggestion is appreciated, guys ! ;)

Cracking the AP US History (04-05), so you should get the 06-07 one then. It was actually interesting to read unlike the sat2 book that I skimmed, which just practically lists facts and facts. I can't be the only one right?

Ouch, what a pity ! The book you suggested ( I mean the 06-07 ) isn't available now ! This means I'll have to wait and don't know whether I'll have sufficient time to prepare for it ! :(
Do you happen to know any online SAT II History source ( or website ) ? Maybe I will have to make use of it right now.
Thankx in advance ;)

I got the Princeton Review 05-06 US History and World History SAT II book and it was pretty helpful if you need to review some things. I'm not in an AP history class this year but I think the SAT II test is easy because you don't have to have an in depth knowledge of things. Sometimes it's possible to just guess an answer if you have a vague idea of what era something happened in. Many of the answer choices are obviously wrong, so it is easy to narrow the selection down.

the REA book is supposedly the best

Whats REA???? I hear it everyone, and its supposedly the best study guide for the SATs

Yeah, what does REA stand for ? I still can't make it out ! :(

I've been wondering that forever, but never could find something I could stand for

haha. ive never used their books but it stands for research and education association

Hum, it seems that picking the best review books is never easy ! Some books work well with some people while they don't with others. I will immediately have a look at Amazon and see the rating carefully ;)

Ah, I have another question: How can you guys remember facts, events, days, names of places... ? I pretty damn sure no one there learn them by heart, so how can you remember them ? Actually, in my country, with subjects like Geo, His, Lit..., " learn-by-heart" is a must-do ! Without it, you are bound to get bad marks. But this doesn't apply to SAT II US History. Anyone there knows any effective methods to remember information, please share it with this neophyte :D. I seem to encounter so many difficulties when choosing to take US His !
Thankx a ton ! ;)
