Advice on Summer Housing in D.C. for a Congressional Intern?

My son got a call from a Congressman's office saying that he is in the final running for a summer internship in D.C., but they advised he would have to find his own housing. The internship would be on Capitol Hill from July 1st to mid-August.

Does anyone have advice on where to obtain short term housing in D.C. for summer interns? (I saw on the George Washington University's website that they offer on-campus housing for summer interns not affiliated with the University.) Any "words to the wise" on pitfalls related to short-term housing?

Thanks in advance.

My sister ( Univ. of Maryland ) had to take out a loan for her summer housing . She stayed in Georgetown ( check their website ) .

MY daughter got housing via WISH. It was fine. Not cheap though.

the metro is pretty good - so you can look in the virginia and maryland suburbs. when i was in school i worked in dc over the summers (MANY years ago) and lived in the Virginia suburbs - subletting from students.

don't by shy about asking the congressman's office if they have suggestions about where to look -- they've dealt with interns before, they may be able to help. another less obvious source of info - your son's own school - there may be alum who are now in school in dc area - he can ask around or check campus bulletin boards - sometimes smart alums looking to sublet know to post back at their college (worked for me one year!)

oh one more word of advise -- AIR CONDITIONING!!!!! summer in dc - a/c very important! :)

Georgetown's law school probably has the best housing for your son's internship because of location. The law school is only about 3 blocks from capitol hill and anyone can stay there in the summer, but they do fill up early. I would check into it. It's safe and in such a great place for internships like that.

Y'all really does come in handy such as "Thanks y'all for the great advice about D.C. housing!" I'll get started on your suggestions right away.

Monydad - I appreciate so much for taking the time to list those super websites! I'll get cracking on it.

Easydoesitmom - I'll check out Georgetown.

Unbelievablem - Great thought on the air conditioning! Also, I am having my son check with his college on any housing arrangements they may have in D.C. for interns. Also, checking with the Congressman's office is an excellent idea as well.

Bellaroma - I would never have thought of Georgetown's Law School dorms. What a great suggestion!

taking the time...

Actually the list was in some old emails from when I had to scrounge around to do the same thing you're doing, and it took about two minutes to find it, cut & paste.

But you're welcome.

I lived at GWU one summer when I was interning in Washington, and I absolutely loved it. The dorm had AC and HBO! :D

I stayed at AU last summer. The staff was really nice and it was decent for five weeks. I'm not planning on going back. Just because of the location and the gym being a little too hot and not opening at 6 AM (instead, 6:30 AM). Air conditioning wasn't too great but it was doable with two fans running in my room.

I'm looking into Georgetown Law... definitey closer to the Mall where my internship will be!

If you want go for cheaper options, then look into George Mason University at the Vienna/Fairfax Metro stop (Orange Line). There is NO housing tax (DC is 14%!!!) so you're paying what you're actually paying for. It has shuttle services and is about 20-25 minutes metro ride to the Metro Center and Chinatown (where he can change trains for the Hill). But the disadvantage is that you're not living in a city so you have to chuck up the money if you want to hang out there over the weekends.
