My son got a call from a Congressman's office saying that he is in the final running for a summer internship in D.C., but they advised he would have to find his own housing. The internship would be on Capitol Hill from July 1st to mid-August.

Does anyone have advice on where to obtain short term housing in D.C. for summer interns? (I saw on the George Washington University's website that they offer on-campus housing for summer interns not affiliated with the University.) Any "words to the wise" on pitfalls related to short-term housing?

Thanks in advance.

Congratulations on his pending offer. Short-term housing: it's best to find sublets, which aren't as cumbersome as apartments (that require you to pay 1st & last month's rent, security deposit, utilities, etc etc)--sublets are temporary rooms students typically rent out, when they go abroad or to an internship elsewhere.

If money is no issue, the university housing would be the best choice, as he could relate and talk to fellow summer students, and feel like he is in school. Let's not talk about the myriad of troubles he may face with a total stranger.

Pitfalls: No furnishings in some rooms (Dorm rooms guaranteed to give you a bed and a working bathroom), noisy neighbors, crime, hidden fees etc.

Pros: Cheap, and available.

Good luck!

thatbigbadwolfy - Thanks very much for your thoughtful and helpful reply!

Craiglist is a great resource, you should check under other areas such as "Room/Shared" also. Anyways, here are some other sites you can check out:

http://www.ishdc.org/ -- International student house, room and board starting from about 850 a month, great location

http://www.internsdc.com/ -- Designed for interns, a bit pricy but also great location

http://career.berkeley.edu/Internships/IntHousing.stm -- Cal has a great page for summer housing in other cities as well as DC.

Good luck! Maybe I'll see you around this summer, I'm still waiting to hear back from my internships in DC.

bfired2 - Thanks for the additional websites! We'll check them out. Good luck on your D.C. internship applications!

i lived in dc last summer in the gw dorms. while they certainly weren't as nice as wash u dorms, haha, they were worlds above all of the sublets that my friends found, as well as the american/catholic u. dorms. georgetown u dorms are also nice but very inconvenient in terms of metro access. i think you can't go wrong living at gw, but wherever you live, make SUUUURE it is close to a metro line, preferably the one you will take to work. that will prove invaluable.

if your son is in high school still, Washington Workshops offers housing, activities, a ride to work, and supervision for congressional interns. If he is in college this post is non sequiter.

Thanks so much to everyone that has commented. The internship came through yesterday so we are going to be looking for housing hard now. We'll first try GW per a couple recs.
