I am working to appeal for UCSC. My SAT scores were above their average and my junior grades were great (plus I got a five on my AP US exam) but my overall GPA was brought down due to a poor sophomore year (struggled with Spanish 2, got a D in the second semester of it after being an A and B student, difficulties with it led to falling 2-4 points short of an A in two other classes), leading to a rejection. I am working to fix that loose end online, while taking Pre-Calculus and two AP classes for my senior year. My 7th semester grades were solid and I have a recommendation letter from my AP US teacher, so I just need to work on my letter. I can't exactly repeat the same topics covered in my essays (coping with a disability, growing up in a tough situation, academic maturity/progression, fascination with film), but I need to be able to convey my worth and how motivated I am at the same time. My essays were highly personal and I put a lot of thought into them, but if that wasn't persuasive enough, how can I write an effective appeal? Can anyone who has experience with the appeals process at Santa Cruz or similar UC schools give me some advice on how to go about this? I have a 15% chance according to last year's stats for freshman, which is better than most UC's but still an obstacle, so it would be really nice to hear from those who have successfully navigated the various hoops of the process.
