advice on where and if i should apply.....

so i am a 15 year old girl living in cailfornia. i have been intrigued by the idea of attending a boarding school for a while now, but lately its becoming more of a goal than just a daydream. my thinking is that i would attend as a junior, which is the 2008-2009 school year. i have typically a A-B average, taking typical sophmore classes (i.e. algebra 2, honors chemistry [although im not doing too hot in that], etc.) i haven't really heard of many boarding schools, hence why i came here for advice. currently i am looking into st. johnsbury academy, however i don't really know all that much about it. without financial aid, that school is definitely out of the question though. i don't know the typical price range for boarding school, so that info would be appreciated as well. Honestly, anything you can tell me is fantastic

If you want to get accepted by the 2008-2009 school year...you better hurry because deadlines for applications are January 10 to maybe early february for some schools
i would say that prices range from $30,000-$40,000 or more

$30,000-$40,000 is merely for the bare minimum.

Most schools (with everything taken into account) can be around $50,000 annually.

ohh wow that's soon. if i apply and get in, what happens if something comes up and it turns out i cant go?

Yeah.....what crickett said
why couldn't they just make tuition a little lower? :(

They won't sue you for not going to their school.
Most people apply to 3-6 schools and only attend 1. They blow off all the other ones they get into.

There are no repercussions for deciding not to go to a school.

Well......i really have no idea what i would do....probably cry though
because everyone on this board worked so hard and if you can't go (especially the TSAO schools) but you got accepted....it would be depressing
but it was definitely worth they try!

What does TSAO stand for?

Ten Schools Admission Organization
It includes Choate, Hill, Hotchkiss, Lawrenceville, Loomis, Taft, and AESD

alright thanks you guys. so is it too late to apply for the january test? i figure i can take it, at least so i have that done, then i can make more final decisions afterwards.

now how much would you happen to know about financial aid...?

you should probably think about recommendations, essays, other forms before you think about FA

I think Dec. 28 was the deadline for registering for the test, but you may be able to get into a test site as a waitlist-type. Go to the SSAT web site for complete information.

You are not too late to apply. You would be at the top of the applicant pool at St. Johnsbury Academy.

It's a somewhat conservative school behavior-wise and politically as well. There is a formal dress code.
Block scheduling (80 minutes of each class every day, then classes change the following semester). So, you would have English or math for one semester per year.
200 boarders/900 kids. It's about $36,000 per year.

You can register for standby for the SSAT. I registered late and it ended up costing $150 because of the late fees and I got the web bundle.

If you live in California, you should consider Cate and Thacher.
They are both wonderful boarding schools :)

thanks for the suggestions, but i'm honestly trying to escape california. going back east is exactly what i'm looking forward to.
and i'm going to try and convince my parents to lend me some money for application fees and the test and whatnot.

ohhh gosh. i want this so bad. i filled out the applications for every one of the schools i'm interested in today.
heres my list:

-choate
-st. johnsbury academy
-middlesex
-loomis chaffee
-hotchkiss
-exeter

i may add one or two to that later, but i think that's pretty good for now

Briana, You might look at Boarding School Review - Boarding School Review - College-Prep & Jr. Boarding Schools In addition to having a great search engine that will let you put in lots of different criteria (location, courses and extracurriculars offered, size of school, etc.), the site will also let you know which schools don't require the SSAT and which schools having rolling admissions (so you don't have to worry about the looming deadline). You've put together a pretty ambitious list for starting the process this late. BSR might help to expand your list.

ohh thanks. i checked out the website and found a bunch of different schools that also have higher acceptance rates than the ones i was looking at.

are the schools going to notice and/or care how many different schools i apply to? i want to increase my chances of getting accepted by applying to a larger number of schools, seeing as this is pretty much my only chance to apply, since starting boarding school at senior year is pretty late

Shouldn't be a problem. Schools don't generally penalize someone for covering all the bases.
