Advice on writing letter of interest? (For deferred EA applicant)

Hi everyone,

I wanted to write a letter of interest to my regional counselor as I was deferred EA, but UMich is my first choice.

What kinds of things should I be looking to include? (i.e. academic? Or more about my connection to UMich and why I’d fit in?)

And also how long would be a good length to make it?

Thanks so much for the help in advance =) I appreciate it!

@Random404 Good luck to you.

I’m helping my sister write her letter this weekend. A question we have is do we send it to the regional counselor or send it to the admissions director of the school she is applying to. Or would you send to both? Not sure who makes the admission decision.

Thanks a lot. I’ve heard you send it to the regional counselor, who will forward it to admissions.

Do you have some tips for writing it? I’d really appreciate them :slight_smile:

@seanalex1

Don’t add any of that academic or fit stuff. It’s not supposed to be a long essay. It’s just supposed to be a short paragraph thanking them for reading your application, and UMich is still your top college, you look forward to seeing your decision in the Spring, etc etc. At least this is what my counselor told me.

@anxiousenior1 Thanks, alright! Are you sure not to mention about fit? I saw some current students (who wrote letters of interest) talking about how the most important thing is justifying WHY it is your first choice. Because anyone can say “UMich is my first choice”. This would be done by talking about what Mich means to you. Idk though

Just keep it brief and straight to the point. One paragraph is good enough. You can update them with academic information (like once your semester grades have been posted). If you visited campus or did something that can really help you justify why you know you will attend if accepted, let them know. But DON’T reiterate what was already on your application at the time of submission and DON’T argue about why you think what was on your application makes you qualified.

Three or four sentences. If it is true, say you will matriculate if accepted.

Thanks guys - Is this to be sent to the regional counselor?
