I'm auditioning for Musical Theater programs. The school I am most interested in wants two monologues of contrasting style (one Shakespeare and one contemporary) and a song. Can anyone give me some direction? I'm looking for something appropriate for a woman in her 20's. What shows would be good to choose from, or avoid? I don't want to choose something that they've already heard 20 times in the past hour. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

I would try the MT forums
But, i know ALOT about theatre, and have had many, many friends go through this process…feel free to PM me

As far as shows, i’d avoid Wicked, Rent, and any of the big numbers from Spring Awakening. They are really big right now and would probably be a lot of white noise

If you like Jon Larson(rent), try his other show tick…tick…BOOM! You could do “johnny can’t decide” sung by amy spanger. It’s modern, but not brand new

AS far as classics, if you go the pipes, do something from Les Mis but ONLY if you can blow it out of the park. Otherwise you’ll look dumb
Or, for a really new show, try Next to Normal.

It would really help to know your range though…so PM me

Definitely go over to both the Musical Theatre and Theatre/Drama Major forums for information about auditions. There is a wealth of info and advice. Also, it will be very important to look closely at the requirements for the schools that interest you. Many (virtually all) of the schools have somewhat different requirements for the audition (re: number and types of monologues, number and type of song, whether there is a dance audition or not, etc.) Good to hear that you already have a school in mind - but audition schools are very selective, so it is probably a good idea to have several schools on your list, as well as some non-audition/safety schools.
