Advice please

Hey people,

I just talked to my school counselor today and realized how much of a jerk he is. He just told me to stop aiming for OOS colleges and aim for instate like UNC (colorado not carolina).

I am a sophmore in a class of 676. I know i should not worry about college quite yet but i am really crushed by what he said.

I have a 3.7 unweighted and a 4.5 weighted.

I have just taken the AP Calc BC, World History, and Chemistry exams and am pending results.

Im currently in Honors English 10, Honors Biology, Honors Physics II, Honors Spanish 4 and Technical Drawing.

Junior Year Im taking AP Spanish Language, AP English Language, AP Physics B, AP Computer Science, AP Us History and Honors Differential Equations/Calculus III.

Senior Year Im planning AP Lit, AP Euro, AP Physics C, AP Bio, Engineering design, AP Spanish Lit, PE

My PLAN score (if you know what that is) was 28 composite.

I play varsity tennis, varsity swim (captain).

I founded the Youth Providing for Hunger League in my community (have done many food and donation drives).

Im in FBLA, Math Club, NHS.

Im doing an internship at CSU over the summer.

I volunteer at my Indian community as the youth secretary and at the library, marathons, etc.

I want to major in engineering most probably either petroleum or mechanical/aerospace.

Sorry to bore you but,

What are my options? Where should i apply and can go?
Should i really stay instate?

THANKS!!!

Can your family afford an OOS college? They normally cost $35-50K/year. In-state colleges cost less because your tax dollars support them.

It is not a money problem. my dad is a petroleum engineer. It is about the quality of my education.

What type of Indian? Native american or asian?

Honestly, Your grades seem fine to me. With all your clubs( esspecially an internship) it looks good on a college application, however, your grades must stay consistant.

I heard that alot of colleges are taking more students from out of state than in state. (out of state students pay more) So if money is not an issue, going out of state may be a better choice if they offer a program you like.

@ Erin’s Dad: I’m asian indian, which will not affect my app in any way right?

@Misa95: Thanks. Can u give me any specific colleges that would be good for my strengths and aims? Im trying to do some research and set some goals.

I think he was asking because your race might be able to help on your app. Haha!

It’s so nice to hear about someone interested in engineering…

Obviously MIT, UVA, Lehigh, Columbia, etc. are well-known for engineering.

thanks bcgirl28. Yeah i was just asking because you do not get any advantage for being indian asian right?

You get disadvantaged because Indians count as Asians.

^ no way thats ridiculous. How??!!

^ Unfortunately true for very competitive schools. Many schools like to maintain a relatively balanced student body. Since some asians are hypercompetitive for the top schools that can put other asians at a disadvantage.

If your family can afford it, here are some fantastic PetE schools: [World Science & Engineering University Portal: Top Engineering School: Petroleum Engineering](University Portal – Blog About Papers Writing For Students)
