Advice please :)

Hey all,

I'm a freshman at Northwestern University looking to transfer for Fall of 2012. I'm deeply interested in economics, business and finance. I was wondering whether I should apply to UPenn's liberal arts college or Wharton; Wharton's admit rates seem a bit intimidating. Could you also chance me on schools such as Columbia, Yale, Dartmouth, UChicago, etc? Thank you so much!

College GPA: 3.90 (multivar calc, economics, distributions, etc )
High School GPA: 3.83 (top 10 HS)
ACT: 35
Recs: 2 strong recs from macro professor (finished 1/255 students in the class) and economics seminar professor (1/15 in the class)

ECs/relevant activities:
President of Students for Mitt Romney
Author of "The ACT Boost"
Co-founder of Adventure Capital Group LLC.
Yahoo! Business and Finance Author
Merrill Lynch Internship (summer '11)
London School of Economics Microeconomics Program
NU Undergraduate Economics Society
NU Economics Reading Group

Awards:
Global Student Entrepreneur Nominee
AP Scholar with Honor
Quill and Scroll Achievement Winner
State Scholar

I feel I have a pretty solid, established passion for economics and its subfields. Thanks for your advice, everyone :)

U of Chicago’s app. for transfers is due next Mar. 1 with all supporting materials. I didn’t look up the other schools, but this would mean that you have very little time to get this done (Recs, HS transcripts, scores sent, etc.). Hurry in other words! I’m not going to guess about chances, but you have over the “magic 3.5” at Northwestern (and great EC’s), so certainly worth applying.

I now see you do have the recs taken care of, good!

thank you! :)

If you think Wharton’s rates are intimidating, you should see Yale and Dartmouth’s; 2-4%.

Can I ask why you want to transfer? Northwestern is a very good school for your area of study.

Yeah, Wharton’s is around the same. I meant intimidating relative to UPenn’s CAS admit rate which is nearly 6 or 7 times that of Wharton’s. NU is a great school, but there just aren’t enough opportunities for undergraduates interested in business and finance outside of the Kellogg Certificate Program (which is highly selective and reserved for upperclassmen). Thank you for taking the time to reply, though :)

All of the school’s you’re applying to have pretty brutal transfer rates, but you also have fantastic HS and college stats and it sounds like very good ECs and LORs, so you should be competitive everywhere. I don’t know what you’re actual chances are, but I’d be shocked if you didn’t get into at least one of those schools. What’s your full list? Good luck!!

PS I’m an econ major at UChicago looking to transfer out, don’t love the econ approach here. If you want to talk about it, PM me.
