Advice Please

I am applying to USNA. It is the ONLY place I want to go after high school.

My record: (White, Male, NJ resident)
GPA: 98.0756 (unweighted)
Rank: 3 of 383
Currently enrolled in AP Calculus AB, AP literature and composition, AP Chemistry, and AP Physics B
SAT: 740m 650r
ACT: 35m 29r

student council general member (fresh-soph)

I could go on, but I doubt you care...

So for the real part of the question,
I received an LOA (thank heavens) and was recently interviewed by NJ senator interim Chiesa, but I havent heard back (its been almost two weeks). Does this mean I was not lucky enough to receive a nomination from his council?

Furthermore, I should be competing for a nomination from Chiesa's replacement, menendez, and my congressman. Do you think I have a decent shot, and do you have any tips to assure I don't mess things up. I want this more than anything.

For nominations, it’s really hard to say, because we have no idea how competitive your district is and so on and so forth. You look like a great candidate though.

You’ll hear one way or another. I think the gov’t shutdown is part of the reason you haven’t heard anything. Just be patient.

Good luck.

Would the shutdown really affect it that much? I thought majority of gov’t workers still had to work for no pay.

You should be a very strong applicant. The shut down is over, so no more worries on that account. Best of luck!

Truthfully, no one can look at your resume and tell you your chances of getting an appointment. Stats are only one part of the application process. While getting an LOA is a good sign, you still need to be a strong candidate during the interview process and since none of use will ever meet you, we have no idea how you might come across in a live interview. The reality is that the interview is a significant factor in who gets the NOM’s.

Do you have any tips that would aid me as presenting myself as a strong candidate? As a high schooler, I honestly have no experience with interviews other than those that I am being thrown into for a nomination

Go here: [United States of America Service Academy Forums - Powered by vBulletin](http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/). There’s a lot of stuff about interviews there.

^^ You can join that other website which has far more active participants or search here on older topics since basically the same questions get asked each year.

Think about what you actually DID/ACCOMPLISHED as class president or student council member. In some schools, these positions are impressive titles with no real reponsibilities that are largely popularity contests. Hopefully, your experience would have included leadership type activities beyond “I organized a meeting” or “we discussed this or that”.

MOC interviews are a chance to express your interests and skills/abilities. Think about answers to expected questions like: 1) why do you want to be a part of the military? or 2) what are your strengths and weaknesses? That is one place to start.

I’ll look into this other forum, thank you
