Advice, Please

D was accepted to her EA school. She also has an overnight visit scheduled at one of her RD schools. This visit was arranged and airfare paid for by the school. D wants to attend her EA school or possibly one of her other RD schools. Would it be appropriate to contact the travel agency that made the trip arrangements and pay for the ticket ourselves? The agency could then reimburse the school and D could withdraw her application.

We know EA is not the same as ED but D doesn't want to have this school pay for her to visit their campus and consider her application if she doesn't plan to attend (provided she is accepted). This is a GREAT school w/ selective admissions.... if D is accepted another equally deserving student is not.

What would your D/S do? TIA

If she has time, she should go visit anyway; they WANT the chance to convince her! If she’s now absolutely convinced she doesn’t want to go, call the school and apologize and see what they want you to do with the ticket. I don’t think you should feel obliged to pay for the ticket if you don’t go!!!

That’s very nice of your daughter, but the college has money in their budget for this purpose and they do not assume that everyone who visits under these circumstances would accept an offer of admission.

In fact, they assume the opposite – they know that she will likely have other offers and they want her to visit so that they can try to show her that she should go there.

As long as the college is not out as a possible choice for her, she should go and should not fret about accepting the free trip.
