I was wondering if my daughter would have a shot at Amherst College. Currently she is third in her class of 250. Her stats are: SAT 2170
V 710
M 700
CR 760
She will be taking them again this Saturday.

SAT II scores of Bio M (750)
Math II 720
AP Bio (5), AP Amer. Hist. (4).

She is the Rensselaer Medal Winner from her school (best science student), and also the Harvard Book Award winner; both won in her junior year. She was just named a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist, as well. She is currently a Senior taking three more AP courses (English, Stats, Calculus) Her GPA is a 4.1. She wishes to major in biology with a minor in dance. She has danced with our state ballet for ten years, and is quite good. She is applying early decision to Amherst. What do you think? I'd love to hear from someone regarding her chances. Thank you.

I say her chances are pretty good. If her essays and recommendations are good, I'd say she would be in. Just make sure she puts her heart into her essays.

Thanks. She is currently working on her essays, making sure that they are a "slice of life" that really shoes who she is. The essay is regarding her ballet experiences for ten years, but specifically one practice on a Friday night when all her friends are out at a movie, and she is committed to dancing.

her ballet experience will really help her i think.. her gpa is pretty good... and yup I say totally give it a shot... she'll probably get in. =).
However, as you already know, give consideration to safety schools also... but yeh... she'll likely get in.

With the Center for Molecular Biosciences at Smith, and its STRIDE research assistantships, research opportunities at Smith are stronger than at Amherst, and dance is MUCH stronger. I am pretty sure there is no pointe ballet at Amherst (students come to Smith for it.)

Chances at Amherst ED look pretty good to me.
