Advice... (read and help if you want to feel better about yourself)

Can you retake a class at any community college or does it have to be the one that you didn't pass it in. Is it better to have a c taking it or d and retake for an a?

Any community college as long as their are equivalent classes. Check assist.org. Take the C (2.0). Getting a D (1.0) then retaking for an A (4.0) (even if you get one) will average to only a bit better than a C (2.5). So retaking will barely give you anything. Plus you waste a lot of time doing it too. I would take the W and then retake. That is the better route number wise.

iTransfer: Course repetition clears the previous grade from being calculated into your GPA (although it will still appear on your transcript).

Example 1: If one receives a C, one will have a 2.0.
Example 2: If one receives a D, one will receive a 1.0. However, if one repeats the same course and receives an A, one will now have a 4.0. The two grades, if they are the same course and the first grade is sub-par, will not both be counted. One can only receive credit/units for one of the two attempts at a given class unless the class is specifically listed as a repeatable for credit course.

I think it depends on the school because at my CC in the LA area it averages the 2 grades

yeah it averages. Say you have mostly Cs for a whole year at cc. You cant just retake them all and get a 4.0 because thats basically starting over from the beginning.

I dont feel any better, sorry.

Which CC is this? I have never heard of one that averages it and I would like to look up the policy myself. The closest I have heard of is that some CCs and other colleges will limit the number of units you can perform course repetition on.

Note that the UCs will not average them, they will use course repetition if you qualify. This is from first hand experience. In fact it was because of the UCs that I learned of a course repetition I had that I had not even noticed (two comparable courses between two different CCs).

guitarfrk123: You’re talking about a C, though, which not considered a sub-par grade. If you repeat a class that you receive a C in, then the grades will be averaged. You can only do course repetition on classes you received a D or F in (ie, sub-par grades).

Some examples of course repetition policies:

NOTE: Santa Monica has an extensive amount of information about Course Repetition. I included the most relevant parts.

And this is, so far going down a list of CCs, the closet I can find to what you’re saying is “not possible at your college.” Is this the one you go to?

Los Angeles Valley College ( https://secure.lavc.edu/LAVC_OnlineOrientation/text/PoliciesProcedures.html#CourseRepetition</a> )

Even this college allows course repetition (up to 15 units), but one does have to do an extra step to have the sub-par grade removed from calculation in the GPA. But the point is: it is still allowed and is obviously not the rule since I have given several other examples showing the different policies. This particular college just has a stricter policy about this form of Grade Point Average improvement.

scrsk8, in my experience I received 2 F’s and 1 D my first semester at CC. I wasn’t motivated and had alot of issues back then. I petitioned for and received academic renewal for my 2 F’s (I don’t know if your CC has that) and for the D, at my community college, I am retaking the course in the spring. Thus, if I were to get an A, my D would no longer be factored into my GPA, and the A would be included in my GPA.

2 things must be considered in your situation:

1) What is your school’s policy for retaking classes? Does the new grade replace the old grade (D)? Or does your school somehow average the two grades to produce a mean grade?

2) Would you be willing/motivated to retake the course again even if you don’t enjoy it and did poorly in it the first time? If you’re willing to retake the course in the hopes of achieving a higher grade, then honestly take the D and retake it.

Of course, the decision is yours, but I can tell you going into my final semester at my CC that I am damn happy that I received a D and not a C in my Speech class because now I can retake it for a brand new grade. This system may seem flawed or unfair, and maybe it is in a way, but honestly I recommend taking the D especially if you’re committed to retaking it and if your CC replaces the D grade with whatever you receive the second time around.

Good luck!

If I get a D in the first time, and I repet the course for second time.

however, i get a W.

If I take the third time for the same course, will the grade point of the third time replace my first D and second W???

if any one can hlep me… please reponse to me as soon as possible…

it is a emergency.

Thank you very much!!!

^I believe it will Samuell, I’m in the same boat with Statistics. I took it once online from SBCC and got an F (computer broke down like 3 times and I had really upsetting personal problems a month after the semester started) so I tried to sign up in Spring but it was full, retook it Fall of 09 and got a D (again, personal problems and I was ill and unused to 4-day class schedules)… So now I was going to take it this Fall and ace it… buuutttt it’s being offered in Spring as an Honors course and that’ll help. Waiting another semester (even if I’m applying to UCLA in the fall) and getting an A in an honors course is better than taking it in the fall and getting an A in a non-honors course.

^However, they won’t see your grades for Spring semester to gauge your qualification. Also, if you don’t take complete transferable math class by Fall 2010 you can’t TAG to some UCs such as UCSD.

^Which kind of screws me, we’re hoping there’s a way to work around that. I’d rather not have to appeal to do it… I’m speaking to the honors counselor on Monday, I emailed the coordinator (two different people) late Wednesday after signing up. We’ll get it all sorted out. It’ll be an… interesting semester, to say the least.

… And UCSD was my safety school, grrr.

Take the darn C. I did. Oh well…at least I don’t need to take the class again right.
