I need help on which colleges to look out for that will accept me. Im a Junior in high school and I know my stats are quite low but im hoping it will raise.
Currently looking at colleges like Washington State, Arizona state, Portland state…etc. (Im from California!)
SAT: 1650-1800
GPA: 2.8
No AP’s or Honors
Want to major in Business.
Us the college search engine on CC. Important first step: What can you/your family afford? Second, when I see a 2.8 GPA with no AP or Honors, and a desire to major in business, I wonder if a Gap Year to gain some business experience and additional maturity would help. It means your senior year GPA can also be added to your overall GPA (hopefully there’s an upward trend). Get a copy of The Gap Year Advantage which provides a lot of information about doing a meaningful gap year (including how to pay for it). Take a look at Colleges That Change Lives too - the big state unis are easy to get lost in and don’t provide a lot of academic and other support, which you may welcome when the academic load suddenly increases and you are far from your traditional support systems.
You can probably get in somewhere. There are tons of options in state that would probably accept you. I see that you say you are from California. I would take a look at some local community colleges. Go there and bust your tail for a year or two and improve your track record. A 2.8 with no advanced courses really doesn’t look all that great. You live in a state with an excellent record of placing community college kids in great universities across the nation, including UCLA, USC, and other great schools. Just a suggestion, I hope this doesn’t discourage you!!!
Okay thank you! My goal is to bump my gpa up to 3.0 this year and hopefully even higher senior year! I have taken a community college business class over the summer that I forgot to include, so would that help? Also to the comment above, my family is hoping for a coa 40k or less.
I agree with futuredoc96 regarding staying in California. There are excellent community colleges in the state. Go there for 2 years. CCs are very inexpensive – almost free. Consider selecting one some distance from home and “live” on campus rather than at home. Work hard. Do well. You’ll then have good chances for transferring to a UC.
