Advice requested : automatic full-ride

77: DD goes to Davis and loves the small town feel of it. The physical campus is big and I don’t think he’d be “eaten alive” there, but the feel is “community”. You may want to consider visiting.

Current federal loan for a dependent student

5,500 for first year
6,500 for year two
7,500 for years 3 and 4

Aunt bea, is it possible for you to write out DD’s stats when an incoming freshman, her major and then the run down of her financial package?

We have been to UC Davis many times, about 45 minutes from our home. Attended 2 day regional robotics competition there as well. It is a wonderful community. Son is an engineering/CS major and the competition/class sizes may not allow for optimal experience.
My friend’s son began last fall at UCD in engineering and wasn’t able to get all the classes he needed, waitlisted, etc. Huge class sizes. Freshman year was really tough.

Longhaul - is there a federal loan available for master’s students?

^^^

Yes there are…and they’re for larger amounts.

P.S. I think Aunt Bea has posted that they don’t qualify for aid to a UC…they pay full cost…but maybe I’m wrong.

Another nice thing about going to an honors college at places like Alabama and Louisiana Tech is priority registration and of course small classes.

Bob - yes, that is exactly what I am thinking on the class sizes.

One of the UA moms did her homework and determined there would only be two large classes for her son.

Thanks, Mom2.

Class sizes are best determined by seeing the school’s on-line class schedule lists the class sizes.

For Alabama, we’ve experienced this with my two sons…

1) If you come in with AP or other college credits, you can skip past many of the typically large lecture classes (like US History).

2) Frosh Comp and other writing intensive classes are small by school policy…because profs can’t grade papers from large classes.

3) University Honors classes only have 15 students per class per school policy.

4) Upper division courses tend to be small or average size. Labs are nearly always small…like 20 students per class.

Since both of my kids came in with AP credits, they didn’t take large classes except for their Jogging class. The gym type classes can be large (like weight training, jogging, aerobics, etc).

Thanks for the info, ucb and mom2.

Does anyone here know a Louisiana Tech parent? Would like to connect and get a realistic view.

Will be applying at UA. :-)
