Advice, Suggestions?

Hi everybody,

I'm a sophomore in high school ( and yes, I do realize that's young to be worrying about college apps right now!) and I was wondering if any of you could give me some advice or suggestions on what to do in order to get into schools such as UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC, UCLA, and UCI.

Some facts about me:

I live in Southern California and I attend a fairly competitive school. My father passed away around seven years ago and my mother is not a college graduate. She is currently unemployed. I'm an Indian girl and my brother already attends Berkeley, where he is a junior and receives financial aid.

Here are some stats:

Ninth Grade G.P.A.- 4.2 (2 honors classes out of possible 3)
Tenth Grade G.P.A. so far-4.4 (1 honors class, 1 AP class. Four honors courses available)

My counselors will allow me to enter the I.B. Program next year, as long as my grades remain the same. That means next year I'll have 5 honors classes, and the year after that around 6 or 7.

I have not received my PSAT scores yet.

I'm interested in the following majors: Journalism, English, Pre-med, and Political Science.

E.C.'s include: Journalism 1 (Pre-req. class needed to start writing for the school newspaper, I plan on becoming the opinion editor) , CSF (plan on staying in it all 4 years), NHS (same), JSA (same), Founder and President of Amnesty International (just started it this year, but so far we're doing really well and already have demonstrations, letter-writing, fundraisers, community service, etc...planned out. This year we're focusing on woman's rights and freeing a prisoner of conscience.)

I've heard that colleges like students who show committment, even if it is to only one or two things. In that case, I plan on fully committing myself to Amnesty and Journalism...Is that a good idea?

Please let me know if "I'm heading in the right direction" in regards to the requirements of the aforementioned schools that I'd like to attend.

Thanks so much!

I live in Sounthern california too, and will be applying to some of these schools next year. For tenth grade, it sounds like your definitely headed on the right track. Just make sure you get good SAT scores, and I think your on your way. One possible suggestion would be to get involved with volunteering at a non-profit organization. That's definitely good to have on your application.

"...what to do in order to get into schools such as UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC, UCLA, and UCI."

I appreciate the way you mentioned UCLA twice... :)

"I appreciate the way you mentioned UCLA twice... "

Haha, whoops! Thanks for pointing that out :)

Caro:Thanks for your reply! What kind of non-profit organizations do you suggest?

I also forgot to add that I take piano classes, but I've only just started taking them so I'm not sure if that counts.

It depends what your interested in. Helping underprivileged kids is always a good one to put on an application and it can also be fun. I work at an animal shelter but I've also helped at summer camps. You could volunteer at a retirement home, soup kitchen, hospital, the possibilities are endless. Just choose something fun to do that could be related to something you want to major in.

Okay, thanks for the suggestions. I've always wanted to volunteer at a shelter for abused women, so I think I might look into that now.

Does anyone else have any more advice or suggestions? I love replies...and smilie faces (that was random, sorry!) :)

No one has any advice to give!??

bump (sorry, but please, somebody, respond!)

bumpity-bumpers

i'd like more suggestions, if anyone has any...please reply, today's my birthday! :)
