OK,

So what things did you bring to move-in...that your student used and was glad to have all year...
What did you/he/she pack/bring that was never used/not worth it?

D was very glad to have a tool box that I insisted she pack. She uses it especially at the start and end of each year to put together and take apart her furniture from Ikea. She’s always lending it to friends too.

She took a Brita water filter with a years worth of replacement filters that she has NEVER used after the first time that I washed it and filled it up with water!

Ditto on the Brita; didn’t find much use after the first week. However, having a fan was a much-used necessity for my S.

There are many threads for things to bring which aren’t specific to Yale.

However, specifically for Yale, I recommend: water filter, fan, and lights.

I’ll disagree with the above posters and tell you to definitely bring a water filter. Two of my suitemates own one and they’re incredibly useful – bottled water is pretty expensive here. The alternative, of course, is that you bring some large container in which you siphon water/soft drinks from the dining halls. Additionally, I wholeheartedly agree with the fan – you’ll definitely need one. There’s no A/C and the rooms get pretty hot in the fall. Also, some of the dorms lack overhead lighting, so you’ll have to bring your own lamps.

If you come from an Asian household and are used to eating lots of rice at home, bring a small rice cooker Seriously, I never knew I would miss “real” rice so much a month into college. My parents brought me one over Parents’ Weekend and I’ve used it constantly since. Water filters are optional; there’s nothing wrong with New Haven tap water. I do tend to use my Brita pitcher, however, simply because it’s convenient to have a pitcher of water in the room as opposed to having to fill up water bottles at sinks/in the dining halls.

Yes, D does like having a fan and you definitely need extra lighting in the bedroom and common room. At least D did all 3 years. She found she did not need a printer or extra sheets. There are some threads with good packing lists floating around on cc.

Knee-high rubber boots (the uniform is Hunter, but there are many others) and knee-high leather boots, both flat. What is the equivalent in men’s clothing?

If you want this thread to stick to room items and not address clothes, let me know!

I agree that extra sheets are never used, but my S enjoyed having a printer.

Definitely missed having a tool kit at move-in and had to run out to Home Depot to buy one to leave for all four years. You can rent a small refrigerator each year for what it costs to buy it once but Yale has strange restrictions about letting you leave it there over the summer so it may pose a challenge to buy if you or one of the roomates can’t take it home each summer.

Having an in-room printer (ideally with a scanning and copying function) can be really useful! It’s nice not always having to run to the computer lab to print out an assignment or copy an important document.

Thanks. Yes I realize there are some packing threads, some older etc…
Yet Yale has better dorms/res colleges than many schools, dining halls in every res college, etc. so there are things some students bring to college. For example: small microwaves, that seems unnecessary.
And some schools only let students rent a micro/fridge combo…

How do students hand things on walls given the dorm regs? 3M tape?

D has a small microwave and a fridge in the common room. Her suite mate lives within driving distance so she takes those two items home with her each summer. On move in day, adhesive hooks and energy efficient light bulbs were distributed on old campus. This was three years back - not sure if they still do this.

Two years ago they still gave students special tape adhesives for the walls so as not to damage them. We would agree on the importance of a fan and a fridge and microwave. My son and suitemates stored them over the summer. My son enjoyed having a floor lamp and desk lamp - nicer lighting than just harsh ceiling. He never used his Brita. He and his mates love to use the large fleece blanket I made - good for naps on their common room futon. IKEA is close by (need a car though) as is Target so you can easily get forgotten items when there.

Good to hear.
Thanks

FogFog, We will have our car so if you need to run to Target or Ikea, we will probably be doing it and you can go with. (That is if you don’t rent a car). I know that when my kids moved into their dorms we ended up driving roommates parents for a Target run so depending on DS’s roommates also a possiblility. Although girls tend to worry about the little details more. ( I know Fogfog off line so this isn’t as wierd as it seems :)) !!!)
