Advice- what college to transfer to?

I'm currently a freshman at Trinity (CT) and I don't hate it but it's not the college for me.

Lsast year, I was pretty sure that I wanted to go to a small liberal arts school in the northeast (I am from near boston) but now Im rethinking that. I am looking for something a little less "east coast prep" with more (not necessarily ethnically) diverse students in less of a "bubble" (better town relationships).

I have a very inprecise view of where I want to go to school, just that Trinity is not it. I really can't decide whether I prefer a big or small school--

The colleges that Ive been looking at so far are:
George Washington
Wake Forest
Bates
Conn Coll (but it may be too similar)
New College of Florida (?)
Colorado College
Whitman
University of Michigan- Ann Arbor

I am looking to major in psychology. Help, please!

What's you GPA at Trinity? What about the midwest, Grinnell is far from preppy, same w/ Oberlin and other Ohio LACs. Colorado College is more preppy than Trinity. If you want the Pacific NW and love to study Reed is about as far as you can get from preppy, but you'll either love or really hate its culture. (And when you leave Trinity take a Leave of Absence just in case the college you transfer to is even less the college for you.)

My current GPA is a 3.066, so I would say that Oberlin and Reed seem like big reaches. I really like what I've heard about Grinnell, except that it may be too rural.
Thanks for the advice!

I think GWU and UMich might be what you are looking for. Unsure on the rest. I'd also check into Wisconsin and Skidmore.

Skidmore is much less preppy, and a bit more druggy. A good school, just lots of drugs.

My younger D who is planning to major in Psychology applied to several of the schools on your list. Her priorities are a top program with opportunities for undergrad research. She is not into the whole preppy thing.

Michigan - Highly ranked program. She loved the campus (it didn't seem as big as it really is...it is really BIG). It also seemed like people were friendly and when we were hanging out in the Student Union, they didn't really seem as divided into cliques as we've seen at other schools.

New College of Florida - My older D is a First Year here and absolutely loves it. It is a very small school and it's kind of like one big family...all kinds of kids who manage to get along. It also has the reputation for drugs, but my D says not that many actually are involved in it much, because they would never be able to keep up with their coursework if they were. The course offerings are more limited, but you have the opportunity to study subjects that interest you with a professor as a tutorial. Professors, not TA’s, teach classes. Many students get into very prestigious post-graduate programs.

George Washington – Not really a school I think of for Psych, but in a great location if you can afford it.

Skidmore – My younger D also applied here. The thing she liked about their program was that she could also take some art, business and advertising courses. She absolutely loved the campus and town. Our hanging out in the Student Union observations were that there is a lot going on. Kids were very friendly and involved in all kinds of activities.

NewEngSocSciMan, is it just that the drugs are there and out in the open? Or is there tremendous social pressure to use drugs there?

Other schools that aren’t preppy with good psych programs that we found are Bard, Washington U STL, U Chicago and Tufts. My D didn’t apply to, but you also may want to look at is Clark.

Thanks for the advice.

Right now my top choices are Grinnell and New College. I am kind of hesitant about applying to another small college because of the potentially stagnant environment, but I always seem to like them better on paper.

Good luck!

Please let me know if you need any further information regarding New College. It is small, but if the community there fits you, I don't think you will feel stagnant...that's not a complaint I've heard from anyone about the school.

bates and conn, while less preppy, will probably still be too similar to trinity for you. you should go hang out at conn to see if you'd be happier there- its an easy 45 minute drive from trinity

What about Ohio Wesleyan?

Ohio Wesleyan might be a good choice if you are in psychology and are looking for a small liberal arts college with a diverse student population and a very good town-gown relationship.

I attend Colorado College and it is not preppy at all! In fact, a lot of the northeastern kids that attend CC wanted to get away from the northeastern preppiness (myself included). I've had an amazing experience at CC and I definitely think it is worth looking further into.
