Ok, so here is the deal

I am a student at Cornell, and am currently (unfortunately) a biometry major. I had a bad first semester my first semester there, and my GPA was not so well off (1.4)... yes I know, no need to flame me. This was mixed in by my complete loss of interest in stat. I however have found a new want and need that is to transfer to AEM. I have tremendously improved my 2nd semester there (still as a biometry major) now a 3.0 GPA, which still I know is not emough. I did apply to AEM and as I expected got rejected.

I need to figure something out... I know there are some ways out.

I have heard of students taking AEM classes and then at last second switching into AEM however I feel that is quite tricky to do.

I have absolutely lost interest and do not want to do Biometry and all that stuff.

I am scared to apply to AEM next semester again as I am scared I will get denied again. And I would be waisting a good amount of time on AEM courses which will go to waste..

I know my situation is not the best, but please... a few words of advice? and please no advice as in "you're screwed"... I know there has got to be some sort of way out for me.

Thanks,
Mike..

have you had much contact with the AEM people besides just applying? I was considering becoming AEM major a while ago, and I was able to walk into some advising hours (in 146 Warren, I think) and work out a plan. this person was pretty clear about what I would need to do - it turned out that I had to take some AEM courses before I could officially apply, even though I had a decent math/econ background. I didn’t actually end up applying, but that’s just because I changed my mind about what I wanted to do.

you haven’t said what year you are, but I am guessing you are a sophomore? it’s not really last-minute to enter AEM, considering that it would be your only major. I think you could complete the requirements without taking excessive amounts of credits, and you’d have two summers to get other useful experience.

if you still don’t think you can get into AEM, I still think you have options. it’s hard to suggest much without knowing what you don’t like about biometry, because you seem to really not like it. are there any other CALS majors you would consider, particularly ones you don’t need to apply to get into? communication, maybe? you could also talk to the internal transfer people if you wanted to move to CAS (I don’t know if the NYS tuition affects you.) they have conditional transfers, which would probably be a good option for you given your GPA and strong lack of interest in your current subject area. [Internal Transfer Division](http://internaltransfer.cornell.edu/)

if you are going to try for AEM again, and you need to take some AEM classes, I would also try to take a few classes that are in another major that you might like so that if you are rejected again, you have a head start on something else. if CAS is a possibility, you can take up to 55 endowed credits while you’re a CALS student, so taking 2-3 classes in that school this semester would be very feasible.

if you spell it correctly (like cotoctin did) and then google it you will find out.

@Columbia09 – the major is actually Biometry & Statistics, which is basically the study of applying quantitative methods to life sciences.

And just to clarify a few things and add more details - I am a junior. I transferred to Cornell Spring 2010. Originally I had interests in a finance/actuary career, which is why I’m in the Btry & Stat major, and since they’re business related careers, I also declared a minor in AEM. But after struggling so much last Spring, the courses were just too rigorous and I couldn’t see myself graduating Cornell with that major, which leads me to believe that maybe a career in finance/actuarial science isn’t the best for me either. Now, halfway through the sem I KNEW I wanted to transfer to AEM, since I’ve always had an interest in business, but I just didn’t know what specialization to apply for.

A summer internship, a marketing class, plus some other AEM related courses I took to prepare for the AEM application, then led me to new interests and me applying for Marketing and Strategy.

And yes, I have been speaking with people in the AEM department. I spoke to Professor Grossman again after receiving my rejection letter to AEM. She did say I can reapply again, but my grades would have to improve pretty dramatically. I intend on applying again, but like I said, I’m really scared I wont get in even the 2nd time around. I’ve emailed a few more people, but still waiting on a reply…

I’m desperately trying to think of a plan b…I dont think any of the other majors in CALS would fit me since they’re all too focused on the sciences, except Communications. I did consider that major, but considering I’m a junior and I haven’t taken ANY COMM classes, I’d be pretty behind.

I don´t know CALS…If you can´t get into AEM, maybe you could do an easy major in CALS, and take a lot of business courses in Hotel or AEM. My daughter is a math major (doesn´t take the hardest courses), and takes one finance course in AEM or Hotel every semester. Now, she does find those courses are a lot easier than her math/econ courses. If you can´t As those finance/business courses, then you should re-think about your plan.

if you’re a junior, you’re right to think it’s pretty late. (after I wrote the earlier post I figured out that you had to be a junior.) is there any other major that you think you could finish in four years, given what you’ve already taken? I can’t think of one just based on biometry courses, but I don’t know what kind of courses you were taking before you got to Cornell.

about doing biometry…you must have done somewhat better last semester to get your GPA up to where it is now. do you think you could finish the major just to meet the graduation requirement that you have a major, whether you liked it or not? the “advanced course list” looks pretty long and varied, so you could be very careful to choose things you thought you might be good at (and even go by the median grades if you think it’s necessary.) if you thought you could conceivably finish the major, you surely know that biometry is area of study with wide application, so if you had more time in the coming semesters, you could take classes in any college that you think would relate to possible career goals - AEM, econ, the business-related hotel courses oldfort suggested.

I understand if you’ve been totally demoralized by biometry so far though…I could not do that math at Cornell.

Maybe you can transfer to CAS for Econ? Econ will be harder than AEM, but you should probably be able to handle it. Just take as many relevant AEM classes as well if that’s what you really want to do. Hopefully you’ve already taken intro micro/macro and they might give you a pass on the econometrics requirement if you are a junior in the biometry program (I’ll assume you have a big statistics background). If I were you, I would go beyond talking to professors and talk to the academic deans of CALS/CAS/etc.
