It really depends what you want. I go to GV and will be graduating in April. I had very similar stats to you though I am a Michigan resident (3.8 UW 29 ACT), if I had to guess you’re an Illinois resident. I didn’t enroll in GVSU’s honors college though. Regardless, if you’re looking for a medium sized school with a small college feel with small classes and good academics, then GV would be a good choice. If you’re looking for the typical “college” experience of big lecture halls and Big 10 football and great academics then U of M or UIUC would be a good choice. As great as U of M and UIUC are, they do focus a lot on their graduate programs and that’s why they have such a good reputation. Furthermore, for undergraduate business and engineering U of M is at least top 5 in the United States. Also, U of M out of state is extremely expensive but Ann Arbor is one of the best college towns in the United States. As for GV, Allendale is okay but Grand Rapids is a great city in Michigan (it is NOT Chicago however) so keep that in mind. Good luck in deciding your college.

Thanks for all the great feedback and keep it coming!

I’m a junior from a michigan high school. I’m planning on starting college visits coming up this spring so i kind of want to narrow my picks down a little bit if i can.

My major is going to be either pre-med or microbiology probably. Something that can set me up for a lot of different health graduate programs (pharmacy, physical therapy, med school, public health, etc.)

cost is probably going to be an issue, idk how much financial aid i can get yet. I really want to go to school near chicago because I’ve always love love lovedd the city, but U of M in state is a great deal… and GVSU is close and cheap with a great honors college…hence, my dillema.

So do any of those oos schools offer good scholarships? Thats why i would go oos to an honors college( more scholarships) well i am going to get a 29-30 on act, i will have ap stats, ap calc, ap bio, maybe ap lit or ap chem. All a’s besides ap calc(b-). I play sports and do extra curr, but i guess i dont go crazy like some ppl. That any help?

I don’t think any of those OOS publics would give a scholarship for an ACT 29-30. Maybe one for an ACT 33+.

To get a scholarship, your scores have to be very high for the school. That means in the top 5-10% of the school. that means that your score needs to be well inside the TOP quartile.

For instance…

At UIUC

the middle 2 quartiles of students have…

ACT 26-31

For UMich

the middle 2 quartiles of students have:

ACT 27 -31

That means that the top quartiles of both schools have an ACT 32+

So, to possibly get a good merit scholarship, your ACT would have to be around an ACT 34+

To get a merit scholarship to an OOS public or to a private means finding schools where an ACT 29/30 is a high score. You will also need to find schools that will admit an ACT 29/30 into their honors college. Some will and some won’t. And, some honors colleges do not have scholarship money.

Have you asked your parents how much they will pay? That will largely decide where you can go to college. A merit scholarship will only pay for a portion of college expenses.

I could get a better act, i havent taken it a second time yet. What about instate? My parents and i have talked some but they hvent said how much they will help with… They are divorced so finances are confusing

Well, see how high you can get on the ACT and SAT (take both).

What did you get on the ACT the first time you took it?

You need to find out from your parents how much each will contribute.

Most schools do not give much aid. Most schools “gap” students.

If you can get your ACT or SAT up high enough, then there are some schools that might either give you lots of merit money or will give you good financial aid (if you qualify).
