I am currently an 18 year old community college student (well, I am taking a break this semester because I'm working) eventually looking to transfer to a four-year.

The thing is, I want to live in Japan for a year, experience new things, and work, etc. If I were to go, I have everything figured out; I have friends and relatives, I can read/write/speak Japanese like a native, so I'll have no problems.

And my question is, when would be the best time to fit in this year? I planned on going around September, so I'll be back in time for fall '07, ready to go back to community college and finish all my preparations to transfer.

But should I finish my general ed first, for example, is there any time between when I'm ready to transfer and when I actually do it? I don't see how that would work, but then again, I haven't talked to a counselor.

As of now, I have one semester under my belt (15 units).

(I also have an unrelated question: What's the math I should take if I want to get into a reasonably good college? Calculus?)

Thanks so much, I know I need to talk to my counselor, I just wanted some general advice first.
