My parents are buying me a laptop soon. I start college June 6th.

I'm not sure how much they are looking at spending...my guess is 600-1000. What brand is better: Hp or dell?

HP from experience.

HP is better (speaking from experience)

HP from experience as well. my family has 1 laptop, 2 desktops, 2 old compaq desktops (which is now a subsidiary of HP) annnd a calculator, and we've yet to experience any major problems.

june 6th is a long time away. are you going to be using this laptop now? or mostly in college? if it's the latter i'd recommend waiting a few months and getting better technology, because it would be useless to you now if you have a desktop already.

im waiting until march to get my laptop i think. Since I start in June.

FHT8,

I've got a Dell Inspiron. The only issue I've had so far has dealt with my printer which is HP. Now I can't say whether it was the printer or the computer that was the issue with it, but my guess is that it's the printer and Vista having issues. (It wants to install drivers and install HP software everytime I plug the printer into USB)

I like my Dell. My roommate has an HP and I don't think he's had any problems either. My family now has 5 Dell notebooks over a span of 6 or 7 years. Yes, my sister still has hers from 6 years ago and it still works!

What ever laptop you get make sure you get a three year warranty on it. Myself I would not get either HP or Dell.

I prefer Toshiba or Acer laptops with Intel chip sets.

The absolute best you could do for a home system is build your own desk top, that way you know what you got.
