I am a high school junior and I'm wondering what classes to take next year and stuff like that. I want to go to a college in California, Cal Poly SLO and UCLA are my top choices (USC too). I have a weighted gpa of about 3.7 and am looking into architecture or commercial/advertising art (maybe psychology). I have taken many honors classes (precalc and physics this year) and am wondering if I should take AP Calc and AP Physics or just AP Stats next year. I'm also taking a design class and an architecture internship to build up a portfolio or experience. My SAT scores aren't great, but I'm thinking of retaking them (CR:520, M:610, W:580). I still haven't taken my ACT or SAT II, but I'm not concerned since I've heard they are easier. I also don't mind going to community college first (since I still want to have a life my senior year) but i just wanted to know my chances first. I would appreciate any advice but i would like to hear from people who know what they're talking about (i.e. actually GO to the school or at least know someone who does). Thank you.

The more AP’s the better.

take whichever is easier, and whatever teacher’s students makes higher scores

look at your college list and see what score you have to make for those schools to get credit; I know tons of people that took AP/IB classes and tests only to find the school they ended up going to didn’t take their exam score, or accept that exam at all

study and then retake your sat

take dual credit courses! and work hard, then you can have a nice grade to transfer in.

To be honest, you have little to no chance at UCLA. I say you look good for SLO, but try not to apply for an impacted major I guess. I had a 3.75 GPA (bunch of APs/honors) and a 1950 SAT with 710/660 SAT IIs and got rejected UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, and Cal. UC admissions are getting tough so make sure and get some safeties.

Wow! This is really weird, because Im in a very similiar situation as you! Im also a junior who wants to do architectural design or engineering, dont know yet, and the schools in interested in are also UCLA, Cal Poly SLO, USC, I also like Wash U, Carnegie Mellon, and Wash U. My GPA and SAT are a bit higher though, I also need to take my SAT IIs. This is hella cool! I never thought Id find someone else so similiar to myself. =]

You should definitely take AP Physics and AP Calc rather than AP stats if you want to go into architecture, next year Im taking AP calc and just regular physics because at my school that class is quite extreme in the level of difficultness. I think you should take AP Calc no matter what, its the basic stuff that you might need to know later.

You should try to raise your GPA, a 3.7 weighted is kinda low, I dont know how colleges will see it though, thats just my opinion. UCLA is difficult to get into, I know a lot of people that were rejected, and some of the people accepted last year said that there was a lot of pressure from competition and classes and whatnot.

Have you ever taken AP Art? I dont know about the UCs, but for privates you might need to send in some sort of portfolio to get in their architecture/visual arts school. You can add that to your other architecture stuff that youre doing right now.

BTW, ^Cryto: you got rejected to UCSB and SD with a 1950? I got a 1950 too, I think Im going to retake it though.

Also, was your GPA weighted or unweighted?

Ya I got rejected from both That’s my UC GPA there.
