Advise a future Santa Monica College student

What I do to skip the traffic is to go down Olympic until 17th, and then go straight into the parking structure. Try to stay away from Pico. And you’re right that its so not worth it to pay for meter parking. And almost impossible to find reasonable free parking on the streets.

Hello Deinese just wanted to know why is it competitive to transfer into ivies from CC and what does it take’s to get accepted

well…to get accpeted into Ivies in the first place is already extremely competitive…and to transfer i guess you have to be within the top 1-4 percent of transfer students. some ivies wont even take transfers and the ones that do only want the best.

it will take a lot to get accepted and it is possible.
id imagine a 4.0 with lots of EC’s internships/research/volunteer
i would ask the Ivy league forum peeps as they have better insight.

Oh okay since im a junior in a HS… I’m stuck between choosing a community college tell me reasons why should i join SMC after i graduate from HS.

there are a lot of reasons…but ill keep it super short.

if you can get accepted to your school of choice out of HS, there is only 1 reason to go to a CC. and thats to save money. otherwise i personally see no reason.

if you cant then…CC is like a 2nd chance to get accepted to your school of choice all while saving a LOT of money that you can use to splurge on yourself haha or save.

hahahahhahahahahaha thankyou plus this thread is helpful keep it goin

Update on parking. Snowboard’s route from Olympic to 17th is a really good suggestion. Avoid Pico as much as possible. Since the last few times I went to park on campus both lots were full; I just didn’t bother and parked on the SMC Olympic Lot instead.

Some practical advice. Anyone looking to get TAP certification should set up a formal appointment with a scholars counselor in order to get the process started. This will insure that you are TAP certifiable and meet all requirements.

You must also attend a mandatory UC application workshop so be conscience of that.

I am excited out of my mind, but i read some things in this thread that kinda scared me. I’ll be joining the winter session which starts January. Will I have a lot of classes to choose from or will my options be limited? Also, do you suggest I get a roomate for the sake of social life or is the social life already great enough? How’s the social life in campus, and in the surronding area? A lot of attractive girls? Oh, and how many classes should I take if i wanna transfer in one year?

SMC’s winter session classes are mainly GE classes with limited sections. You should be able to get in at least 1 class but 2 3 unit classes qualifies as full time and is doable. The benefit of 6 week summer and winter sessions is being able to complete more units yearly. SMC classes are not a breeze and it would be difficult to transfer out in just a year. SMC is a great CCC worth doing 2 years at.

SMC is a commuter city college so is mainly concrete with little room to grow besides trees used for some shade. The main grassy hang out spot is the Clocktower located by the cafeteria. You will meet attractive females and cool people from all around the world in class or during breaks but it is not a big hang out school. Downtown Santa Monica, Venice Beach and Westwood/UCLA area are only a couple miles away and are the fun hot spots where people hang out at.

Across from SMC on the Pico side is Santa Monica’s ghetto where student housing of the 70’s was converted into state subsidized housing for poor minorities, crazies and rehabs. It is more surreal than it is dangerous but not many students want to live there since locals just live at home and commute.

How has everyone handled the first 2 weeks mayhem?

Hey everyone, I don’t know if this is still an active thread, but still
Is it worth driving 60 miles to Santa Monica College for the the Inland Empire? How hard is SMC?
Is it worth driving from one hour and a half each way from the valley to Santa Monica Community College? The closest community college to me is Valley, it had about 11 people get accepted last year to UCLA giving it a 42% admit rate.

I really want to go to USC or UCLA. How hard is it to complete the Honors Program for SMC? I have taken about 10 AP classes in High School, so compared to that how hard would it be?
