Hi Guys. i'm from Sai Gon , Vietnam, U guys may know from Vietnam war :)). i'd lived in Iowa for a years, then my family moved to Texas because it's too cold in the north in winter. So i'm gonna apply to these school for Computer Science: Texas A&M at college station, UT at Austin, Texas Tech and University of Georgia.
Can anyone give me some advises about these school:
_Which one have more trees, parks with mild, fresh atmosphere?
_Friendlier student, less racism ( that what i worry most, though i have no problem in making friend with white, actually i have lots of friend in Iowa and they all go to ISU and UI) ?
_Good dorms
_which one have great spirit, good football team, outdoor activities, ....
I've heard that at Austin, student party all the times and at Texas A&M, student especially girls are bossy and lots of Corps who don't want to make friend with Asian, no offense i've just heard from student at my school.

The schools listed are state schools so cost of attendance (COA) goes way up if you are out of state (OOS).
The best place to ask about a specific college’s campus life is the forum for that particular college. But there is already a lot of information out there so just use the search function on this site or google your question.

I think UT Austin is your best choice, especially with in-state tuition. It’s the strongest academically, too.

I don’t think any of them have a lot of trees and parks. Austin is a big city but there is a lake there. There are no trees in Lubbock or College Station. It’s flat barren farm land. I don’t really know about U of Georgia but it probably has the most as far as the out doors goes.

They all have great spirit and football and spirit.

UT-austin is probably the best option as far as racism goes. Texas A&M though has become a much more international college because they get engineers from all over the world it is very conservative though. I imagine Texas Tech being somewhat international but I really don’t know a lot about it. U of Georgia is more of the white frat boy type so if you can fit into that then you will be okay.

University of Georgia has one of the strongest forestry programs in the US and is surrounded by trees. Though there’s few parks in the traditional sense, there’s a botanical garden just outside of campus as well as plenty of places to hike, kayak, etc. If you want to do outdoors oriented activities, UGA trumps both UT and A&M.

UT-Austin is academically the strongest school of the three, probably followed by UGA, and then A&M.

In both Ga and Texas, football is practically a religion, and even Subway employees in Ga wear shirts that say “Go Dawgs”, so there’s no shortage of school spirit at any of the three schools you listed.

I’ve had a bad experience with some of the townies in Athens, so racism certainly isn’t unknown at UGA. That being said, there are plenty of people of all creeds that attend the school, so I doubt you’ll be subject to harassment by the students. I don’t know enough about the Texas schools to comment on their attitudes although I’d imagine that a non white would feel comfortable at UT.

UT hands down. Very international feel. Tons of outdoor activities, great academics, very open to all kinds of people. A friend’s husband came over on a boat from Vietnam in '75, attended and tutored at UT meeting my friend, married her. Awesome guy. Great experience at UT. You can’t go wrong with your major here, just perfect for what you are looking for, and more open minded than the other schools, which are great, too, that you mentioned.

I agree with those who say Austin is your best choice. Most of the high-achieving students from my school (TX) typically end up there and they’re not kids who obsess with parties and stuff, so you’d be able to avoid that scene if you wanted. The school has a very accepting culture and is the strongest academically. Even though the campus is huge with lots of buildings, there is still plenty of grass and trees compared to other big schools I’ve visited. Plus, you get in-state tuition.

(IMO)
Great spirit:
A&M > UT > Tech > UGA
Great sports (football I’d probably rank the same):
UT > A&M ≈ UGA > Tech

and I have no clue about the outdoor activities at each.

Be sure to run the net price calculator on each school.

Note that Texas public universities admit a large part of their frosh students based on class rank (top 10%, or top 7% at Austin; must be Texas resident), or class rank and test scores. So you can tell easily if you will be admitted (although Austin might not admit you to your major even if you are an automatic admit otherwise). Check their web sites. UT Austin has a top end reputation in computer science.

The Iowa public universities have a Regents’ Admission Index formula that you can use to calculate whether you will be automatically admitted. Although relatively inexpensive for out-of-state public universities (particularly Iowa State), they will still likely cost more than Texas public universities for a Texas resident.

For computer science, the obvious school in Georgia is Georgia Tech.

However, many people would have a hard time finding that city on a map.

Academically, its UT>A&M>UGa overall, and also for STEM fields (of which Computer science is a part)

UT-Austin is in a beautiful area though-next to lake travis, enchanted rock etc. lots of outdoor activities in the nearby vicinity.

Sports Culture
UT>(slightly) A&M, UGA
UGA and A&M are big football schools, while UT has huge Basketball support as well

I have a few Asian friends from my high school in the Corps of Cadets here at A&M, and they enjoy it and have made good friends.

UT Austin is the most diverse.

Pick between those three, leaning towards UT and A&M. Tech shouldn’t be on your radar. Way weaker student body than the other three, and generally stereotyped as the school UT and A&M rejects go to.

If it’s do-able, consider GA Tech.

tks guys, my tuition will be for international student cause im not a citizen yet. how about honor program at UGA vs normal computer science major at UT, u guys recommend any schools at the same level as UT in the south or mid? is atmosphere at UT is fresh and mild ?
