I’m taking SAT II on Dec 1, which subject tests should I take?

I’m thinking Math 2, Physics, and Spanish.

My native language is Spanish (I’m Honduran, …Central America) and I’m pretty sure I’d ace a Spanish test. However I’m not sure colleges or universities would be interested, maybe they feel it is natural a Spanish speaking person scores 700-800 on a Spanish test, but, comparatively, Americans in general don’t score 700-800 on the SAT I Writing and Critical Reading sections, and I’m sure most fellow Hondurans would not score 800 on a Spanish test.

Anyway, should I choose something else instead of Spanish?

Incidentally, what are my chances … ?
I scored 2190 on my SAT, good GPA, top 10% of class, great recommendations, etc.
The thing is Honduran high schools don’t have many activities, I’ve seen other posts in which some folks say they were Debate Class Presidents, or Public Relations Officer, or CEO of the-devil-knows-what. In Honduras there are no such things, consequently I do not have any of these things to name in my application. Will this affect my chances? By the way, I, too, need plenty of financial aid …

Thanks !!

Make sure your school counselor (or whoever sends the documents for you) states that there are no extracurriculars in your school. Have you been active in church? Active in the community? That would help. Your stats are in line. I really don't think it matters which SATII's you take. Although Dr. Marx has been trying to place International students under the umbrella of "Meet 100% of financial aid," that hasn't happened yet. That said, they have been very generous with international aid. Considering there aren't many Hondurans in the school, you have bonus points for diversity. Apply, and Good luck!

thanks ejr1,

so what's the deal with financial aid? I presume admittance is tough for international students, but once you're admitted, is it true, as the Amherst website claims, that your whole financial need is covered?

I mean, if I can only pay 6,000 % a year, if I get admitted, will Amherst really offer me nearly 40,000$ in grants, loans, and jobs ?

Back to the subject tests, I have more than a month to study for the test, however the collegeboard deadline is Oct 30 so I need to make a quick decision.
Anyone else has an opinion ?

Currently Amherst meets 100% of financial aid for American students. It does not as yet for international. However, they are very generous. And yes, they do give $40,000 if that is what is needed.

I thought they DID meet 100% need for internationals - but admission is not need blind.

I don't get it, the web page says Amherst is not need blind with internationals, but if you're admitted your demonstrated financial need is met.

from Amherst web page:

If admitted, you will receive financial aid equal to your financial need through a combination of scholarships, loan and work opportunities. Your demonstrated need is met in full; there is no "gap" (unmet need) in our aid awards.

That's for international students.

Is that really true ? Man, I hope so, I'll guess I'll find out in April.

Yes, that's what I said. They will meet all of your demonstrated need, but they also take that need into account when deciding whether to admit you. This is set to change soon, though.

and this is more or less the policy of many top liberal arts colleges right? like williams or swarthmore... ?

I mean, it's tough to get admitted but once you're admitted you'll get the help you need.

I'm applying to 12 or so liberal arts colleges, my favorites are of course Williams and Amherst ... but I must get admitted to at least one college !

What about the SAT II ? The collegeboard deadline is next Tuesday, I've got to figure out which tests I'll take.

Williams is currently need blind for internationals - I thought Amherst would be by this year, too - perhaps next year? You can never count on anything as an international, however. Good luck!

The Spanish SAT II would not be as difficult, objectively, as the Critical Reading/Writing SAT sections, so I don't know why you would compare them to each other. The SAT II is designed such that a native speaker should receive a perfect (or near perfect, at the very least) score on it. The CR and W tests are not designed the same way, and are much more difficult.

I cannot advise you about which tests to take - I suggest you call/email the admissions office on Monday.

You´re right, my comparison was way out of proportion. I've been looking at the official CB sample questions and the test is extremely easy. Any native spanish speaking person can score 700-800.

Anyway I registered Physics, World History, and ... Spanish. I figured I didn't have time to study Math II and Physics at the same time since I didn't cover in school most of both test contents. And I prefer Physics ...

And Amherst really only asks for two sat subject tests, so if I score highly in Physics and WH it won't really matter if I chose Spanish.

check the collegeboard site, but I think that, other than Language with Listening, it doesn't matter what SAT IIs you sign up for - you can do whichever ones you want on the day. I'm pretty sure this is the case, but not 100%, so please check the collegeboard site. But watch out for Spanish with Listening vs just Spanish, because the 'with Listening' tests are the ones you can't change, I believe.

Another question: How does Amherst define "financial need" for an international student?

My family's annual income is 32,000$ and the Savings are 50,000$. I am my parent's only son. What is my financial need?

There is a financial aid calculator on the Amherst website. Run your numbers through it.

the fin aid calculator works only for American students ...
