Advise on transferring to University of Miami

Posted this in the UM forum but haven't received a response yet, I'm thinking perhaps people here would be able to help. I'm aiming to transfer into the University of Miami for the Fall 2012 semester as a junior and would love to get any advice or tips from previous transfers who have been through the process.

I'm currently attending the University of Houston as a freshman commuter and I'm taking 12 credit hours. Obviously I don't have an official GPA yet but I have been doing pretty good so far. At this time I have an A in my mathematics course, an A in freshman composition, an A in psychology, and a B- in history which I definitely plan to raise once the second midterm comes around.

As of yet I haven't really found an organization to join, UofH isn't a very active campus but I'm planning on going ahead and joining a volunteer club our school has just so I can have something under my belt for freshman year.

Assuming I stay on track, should Miami be that hard of a school to get accepted into as a transfer? Specifically, how is the business school with transfers? (my planned major is Finance) How many ECs and what type of orgs should I have under my belt to look like a good candidate? Also what kind of a GPA should I have in order to land some decent scholarships? I'm well aware of the tuition they charge and I'm kind of scared as to not only whether I can get in academically but whether financially I would be able to afford it. I have no problem with taking out a loan but I'd like to not have a huge sum of debt straight out of college. FASFA has calculated my EFC as 0, so I'm unsure as to how much aid I can expect from them if I wind up attending UM for two years. Does anyone have any experience with financial aid in UMiami?

Sorry for all the questions, lol. I just really have a lot on my mind; two years will definitely go by faster then it seems and I just want to be ready for it all! Like I said, any help with these questions from people who've been there or know about UM would soo be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance!

Don’t sweat it, it’s not as difficult as everyone seems to think. I had a decent amount of extra curriculars, 2000 on my SAT’s and a 3.2 GPA. now, 3.2 is not that great of a GPA and I got in. so just keep your mind on track, keep your grades up, participate in whatever activities you can and you should be good. And as far as the expense, I hear they give good financial aid packages but i’m not sure, i’m thinking of transferring for spring semester.

Oh and P.s. If you want to get into U of M, you might want to start with your grammar haha. It’s “advice” not “advise”.

cheers.

Anyone know if transfer admission to arts and sciences is more difficult than the school of communications? The comm school makes you double major, so I would end up doing English/Journalism either way. Which would be easier to transfer in to, though?

Sorry to double post, I don’t see an edit button for my other post. Speaking of financial aid packages, even with the $16,000 scholarship (which are hard to get, I called the financial aid office and was told students with 2 years of college under their belt are usually the only ones considered and even then don’t count on it) that still leaves around $30,000+ per year without dorming. Is a full ride unheard of for transfers?

(lol yea I know about the title, bad typo & I was too lazy to make another thread :stuck_out_tongue: haha)

Yea, I was wondering the same thing as well. I mean to be $60,000 in debt is a huge thing and then you have to add another 20,000 for dorming! I’m definitely not expecting a full ride but I would absolutely love to hear from someone that transfered and has experience with their transfer aid.

Luckily I live in Miami, so I could live at home. I would hate to, though! Yeah I’d like to hear from other transfers.

buuuummmppp… (gosh that typo burns my soul every time I see it)
