hello, i am a 26 yr female entering my first year of engineering. I am having problems picking my major. I live in alberta, canada and my school offers different degrees in all the areas. basically computer, physics, electrical, civil etc.. dont really interest me so i've been looking at petroleum, mining or now i maybe thinking chemical engineering. I also think biomedical might interest me, however with biomedical i think you work on the same project in a LAB for 2 years re-testing the same theorys and i am afraid i would get annoyed and bored at my job. I've been a carpenter since high school and now i dont want a job that is purely office work.

anyhow, i am aware that petrol, mine, chem i would work away from home. at this point in my life it doesn't bother me, in the future i think it might get annoying raising a family..lol however i definitely see myself teaching at a university.

can mining do petroleum? keep in mind its two separate degrees in my university so i can not take mining with extra classes in petrol.

It would be wrong of me to tell you which major to choose at this point because I barely know your interests or what type of person you are. If you could explain some of your interests ect. I can point you to the right major
And please do not stress this because you won’t get anything through stress!

Seems to me like you aren’t sure. In that case ChemE is a good “feel it out” major that might lead you to switch to mining or petrol. if that seems to fit better.

^ I’m going by what I was told by senior Pet E. Yes, a Chem E can get an upstream job. However, a Chem E hasn’t taken Drilling, Well Testing, or Well Completions courses. It would place the Chem E at a disadvantage. Similarly, a Pet E wouldn’t have taken the refining courses that a Chem E has.
