What are my son’s chances of admission to U. ARK? He has a unweighted GPA of 2.875. His SAT scores are: 640 reading, 500 math, 640 writing. He has taken AP classes all 4 years. He has applied and this is his top choice, but I don’t want to get his hopes up if indeed his GPA will hold him back from admission. He is a Texas applicant. His major will be business.
I would appreciate any advise.
Thanks

Automatic Admission for New Freshmen

■High School GPA of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale
■20 or higher on the ACT (930 SAT, combined critical reading/verbal and math scores only)
■Must have completed or be in the process of completing the 16-unit preparatory core
Students not meeting these criteria are still encouraged to apply and will be reviewed for possible admission by the University of Arkansas’ Admissions and Appellate Board.

Only a guess, but I think he would get in with the 1140 SAT being well above automatic admission standards while the GPA is just under the automatic qualifying level.

Aren’t ALL THREE required? If only one is required, it doesn’t make much sense. Someone could just complete the 16 units and have a 2.0 and 12 on the ACT and still be in.

All three are required for “automatic acceptance”, but they will still review the application if you don’t have all three. I’m assuming with that high of a test score that they would probably accept the student with that GPA after reviewing the application.

McKinneymomma- They will add weight for AP classes, and it sounds like that might make a significant difference for your son. Do you know what his AP weighted GPA is?

His transcript says weighted is 2.7. I don’t know if that is with APs or not. He’s a classic underachiever. Smart kid but just fooled around. Now it’s time to apply and he’s getting serious about school. Not sure one semester his senior year will get him in where he wants to go. How much do they take into account that he’s out of state?

Mckinneymomma-
His weighted GPA couldn’t possibly be lower than his unweighted GPA on a standard scale, so that is quite strange. I’m guessing by your name he goes to one of the McKinney high schools, and it’s possible they do their calculations strangely. It’s been too long since I have looked at one of their transcripts to tell you for sure how theirs works though…

If it’s a strange system, or they don’t add weight the same was the UofA does, his GPA will be recalculated to the standard 4.0 scale with an extra point of weight addedd for AP classes. If you think that may be the case, once you send his transcript in (which I would recommend doing as soon as possible if you haven’t already- their admissions cycle is rolling now and you don’t want him to miss out on getting to sign up early for class registration and housing), call his admissions counselor and ask them to take a look at the transcript/recalculate the GPA for you. They’ll be able to give you a definitive answer on what his GPA is for admissions purposes.

I’ve never heard of the committee putting much consideration into a student being OOS, but if you’re concerned about that a letter of explanation or a letter of intent sent to the admissions office would be read by the committee (if his file needs to go to the committee) and may help address their concerns.
