This is all very interesting especially as I break down his ACT sub-section scores.

Reading
-------Arts 17=97th
-------Social Studies 16=93th

Math
-----------Pre Alg 15=89%
-----------Alg 15=96%
-----------Trig 16=99%

English
Usage ---------14=85%
Rhetorical -----15=94%

English usage and pre-algebra the two worst which tells me this is a solid test. He does great with the concepts and ideas expressed in his writing but just ok with his grammar and usage. He also struggled with early algebra but not more complex math later.

More than just a test this is a good diagnostic tool for him to use this summer!

another observation, DTDad:

Our son, the MathGeek, was surprised he did not do better on the basic math portions of the test the first time out. He said that he was so enmeshed in the Calculus he was studying at the time that he tended to approach each problem as a calculus problem, thereby WAY overcomplicating everything.

"If the only tool you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail."

My son regularly got easy math problems wrong on the SAT. Sheer carelessness. He either misread questions or left out steps. At least one was literally a problem almost any fourth grader could do. Cost him 20 points. :(
