Just starting the college search for 2nd D, who is a junior in high school. IU was only one of two schools (the other was Notre Dame) that we visited with older D that wouldn't arrange for us to speak with faculty, and we visited Pitt, UNC, and UVA that year among others. So my initial experience was to be a little put off by IU since they wouldn't talk with (potential) students. I'm hoping once 2nd D is a student at IU that she finds staff more accessible. Students, how has your academic advising experience been? Have you received good help in selecting and putting together an academic plan? What about internships and graduate school applications, and/or future employment?

Maybe it depends on the department, but my son emailed the professor who is head of the department in his intended major and went and met with both the adviser for that department (45 minutes) and the professor (2 hours). He also went and met with the people at the honors college. This was fall of senior year.

I’d advise your D to email whomever she’s interested in talking to directly!

We were able to arrange (via email) a half-hour visit with the undergraduate advisor of my D’s intended major when we visited last summer.

The advisor gave us the recommended coursework plan for all 4 years and was up to date on her major’s career recruitment, starting salaries, rank of the department compared to other colleges’, etc. Answered every Q we had. She even advised us in advance where to park and reminded us of the time change between our states. Very helpful.
