Son is Honors, Bio, pre Med major.
First year student, but sophomore standing.
So how does advising work? He starts with A&S to make a general plan, then Bio dept advising after the 16th I think. But does Honors weigh in at anytime?

He follows the Bio req’ts for his bio track, and the Core Req’ts for the school. As a pre-med, he also needs to complete those req’ts. I’m not sure what you mean by “starts with A&S”…unless you mean the Core Req’ts.

Does Bio require a minor?

He’ll go to his Advising with his plan, then gets it approved, has his hold lifted, and then he registers at his “time”.

As long as he completes 18 credits in Honors, at least 6 credits must be UHP, then he’s fine.

I believe that the IHP class that is about Cultures also counts for UHP…both the frosh and non-frosh versions of the class.

English 103 is also an honors class, but I don’t think it counts as a UHP.

Which advisor lifts the hold? The A&S advisor or the major advisor?

Another advising question or 2. S is no longer pre-med, I assume he should get out of Chris Hutt’s group & into a general A&S group? When does he get an actual advisor? When he chooses a major, or when he gets “accepted” to the major as an upperclassman?
What if he wants to change majors or college. Who does he book an advising apt with?

He should probably join the general A&S advising group and strongly consider declaring a major. Once he does so, he can talk to that major advisor. Granted, there are a number of people in each department who can lift advising holds, but it is best to speak with an advisor to have a better idea of which courses to take.

I’m still unsure.
Son is first year student, sophomore standing, honors, Bio major planning to go to med school.
My question is about Honors and advising.
I understand he would starts with college of Arts and Science advisor. (choosing someone from pre med for advising). Then goes to Bio advisor.
My question is does Honors also need to approve the schedule?

We met with Honors when we visited UA. Dr. sharpe had lots of information and suggestions about what he would need to do as a Pre med. But now that son is at Bama does Honors ever meet with him again, or is it simply up to him to complete the 18 hours?
Who helps him know about things outside of class scheduling that he would need as a Pre med?

No, honors does not approve the schedule. However, it’s a good idea to take some of the Honors courses that are related to being a pre-health student…like Medical Spanish and that class that helps with med school apps.

At any time, he can speak to an Honors faculty person about courses, etc. And when he’s a senior, he’ll have an appt with Kiki to make sure he’s met all the req’ts.

I’m not sure about the idea of starting with the A&S advisor. My math son only went to his math advisor, never to an A&S advisor. I’m thinking that an A&S advisor might be for those who are undeclared…not for those with a declared major.

He should talk to a Pre-med advisor about those issues.

He should also join the Pre-med club (Alpha Epsilon Delta). Is he on the ListServ for pre-med? If not, he should be (and parents can be on the list as well).

Scoll down to get put on the Listserv
