Apparently "AEM 3240 - Finance" has three prerequisites: AEM 2100 (Intro Stats), AEM 1200 (Intro to Business Management) and AEM 2210 (Financial Accounting).

I have taken Stats but I have not taken Management or Accounting. If I were to somehow get permission to enroll in this course without those two prerequisites would it be difficult to understand the material without those courses as a foundation?

Not having taken AEM 1200 doesn’t matter; AEM 2210 helps you in the course. I don’t know how easily you’ll be able to enroll in the course without the prereqs in the fall. Curtis is a stickler for his rules and sometimes asks that each student’s prereqs be checked. In the spring, it will be impossible to enroll in it without the prereqs.

You say that AEM 2210 helps. Would you say, however, that it is necessary to take in order to get an A grade in AEM 3240?

Obviously, a course sequence like Calculus 1 and Calculus 2 is an example where the former course sets the foundation for the second and so it’s pretty much necessary to take the correct prerequisites. Is it like this with AEM 2210 and AEM 3240?

Student Center doesn’t check for prereqs when you enroll online so technically you can enroll in the class (if there still is space). I’ve not taken stats but I was able to enroll in the Spring.

Except for 2210, I don’t think the other prereqs are necessary for an A in the class. You will have some trouble if you’ve not had accounting but you can pick up the necessary materials from any accounting textbook with minimal effort.

I think that you should really take Financial Accounting before Finance just by what I’ve heard from my AEM friends. Intro Business Management isn’t really necessary though.

For some classes, it’s no big deal if you don’t have the prereqs, but for Curtis’ class, this is not the case. You NEED to take the prereqs. He will almost NEVER let you in without them.

I took AEM Finance my sophomore fall semester because I happened to have all of the prereqs, which was unusual (I had AP Stats credit and took Fin Acct my freshman spring semester). Curtis emailed me four separate times over the summer to confirm that I had my prereqs. I finally sent him a copy of my transcript to prove it.

^cc102’s situation is why i said curtis is a stickler for his rules and will not let you in (especially in the spring) without the prereqs.

no, accounting is not necessary for finance as calc 1 is for calc 2. if you study everything curtis gives you, an A is not too hard to get. accounting helps though.

cc102:
I guess I’ll have to take Financial Accounting this semester then. Thank you for the info.

Had you taken “Intro to Business Management” before you took AEM Finance? That is a course that I really don’t want to take as I have few electives and it doesn’t seem that relevant.

Do you know if Curtis generally allows one to take the course without having taken “Business Management” if one has taken Accounting and Stats?

AEM 1200 will be a prereq for almost every AEM class that you take. if you plan on being an AEM minor or major, it is required to graduate as well.

Curtis will most likely want you to take Intro to Bus Mgmt. He is the one who makes up the prereqs - he’s going to follow it. That said, if you’re not an AEM freshman, you can’t take AEM 1200 in the fall so you will have to wait for the spring.
