AEM compared to Econ

This might be a stupid question, but which one would u think is harder to get in? Im actulaly interested in business, but i really dont mind majoring in econ in CAS; ill be just as happy there. Well actually i dont thnk the major has much effect in terms of admission to CAS, but generally speaking, is it harder to get into AEM then CAS? and even im just wondering, u can apply a second major to CALS, so in a way, thts a 2nd try yeh? basically even if u dont hav a particular interest in another of the major, u should put in sth and if u get in, trying transfering in soph year?

I don't know which is more difficult, but Econ is much more respected. AEM is a walk in the park compared to it.

From what I've been reading off this board the past month, and there have been a lot of AEM posts, most people have said that AEM is the hardest major to get into in the entire school. I believe they have a 19% acceptance rate.

As an Arts and Sciences student, you don't declare you major until your Junior year, so you are not admitted as an Econ student. You will apply to the College of Arts and Sciences and your application will not be judged based on your prospective major. CAS is very selective at a 21.7% acceptance rate for the class of 2009.

Within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, is the AEM department, an accredited undergraduate business program. The acceptance rate for AEM was 19% for the class of 2009 (CALS overall was about 29%). If you decide to apply to AEM, and want to fill out the application with a second major choice, you should be satisfied with that choice as well...as you won't be able to transfer to AEM immediately.

You should follow your passion and apply to the program that most interests you. They are both competitive to gain entrance into, so you should take the risk and be happy with your choice. To quote a previous post <<basically, students="" that="" want="" an="" “undergraduate="" business="" degree”="" would="" be="" interested="" in="" aem,="" and="" on="" a="" macro="" (broad)="" level="" might="" more="" inclined="" to="" choose="" economics.="">></basically,>

"If you decide to apply to AEM, and want to fill out the application with a second major choice, you should be satisfied with that choice as well...as you won't be able to transfer to AEM immediately."

I'm applying ED to Cornell this fall, and am deciding between majoring in AEM & Econ. Are you saying that I can put AEM as my intended major, I can put Econ as my 2nd choice? I thought that you can only list a 2nd choice if applying to CALS, and the 2nd choice has to be a CALS major, and cannot be a CAS major.

Hi Fantosme,

Not at all!

I was responding to the OP's questions regarding Econ or AEM and strategy within CALS.

One of the questions was regarding applying to a second choice major within CALS (i.e., Biology, Animal Sciences, Communications, etc). He/she questioned whether it would increase the chance of gaining admission if a second essay was submitted for a 2nd choice major within CALS. CALS is unique in that you can apply to a 2nd choice major, but only within CALS. I suggested that the OP should be satisfied with the 2nd choice major as well.

You cannot apply to AEM in CALS and Econ in CAS as a second choice...no...no...no!!
