AEMES Scholar

Hey! I received in the mail an invitation for the Aemes Program. Anyone else get that? If possible can anyone already in that program comment about it?

Hey, I also received an invitation for the Aemes Program. WOW, the opportunity to do research with faculty as a freshman and get paid for it… that will give me some badly needed spending money. I just took a part-time job in a nursing home dietary department, making up special diet food trays and then I get to scrub the pots… the time goes fast, I get a workout and some money for school… I’m really happy to get this invitation… getting the chance to do research and make some spending money… that’s hard to beat! from NJ

Hey carmarie09, have you definitely made you decision yet on which college you will attend? I’ve been in an all-girl high school for 4 years, and kind of wanted to go to a coed college. Sometimes I feel like I’m going to have to work among men in the real world after graduation so college is a good place to start doing that. But on the other hand, Smith has a great reputation and has the engineering that I want. Also, There is always the chance that in team engineering projects with mostly guys, they might try to dominate the project and I might have to spend a lot of energy holding my ground on projects instead of being able to spend it on doing the projects. And of course invites like AEMES has to be considered seriously. I’m going to the Open Campus Program on April 16-17 and staying overnight. Maybe that will clarify things for me. I can’t stay for the discovery weekend because I have one more open house to go to on the weekend… then it is decision time! Having all good options makes it harder. Are you going to Open Campus?

Hey On my way, I am in the same exact boat as you, I have a choice between a co-ed school and Smith. But I think that the incentive of the paid research definitely tips the scale in favor of Smith. But in terms of what college you should choose, it all has to do with how well you gel with the campus and the people. Besides if you think that you gel really well with Smith then it’s worth another four years, besides there are guys that take classes and wander around the campus! I won’t be at open campus or discovery weekend because of a Spring Vacation trip. But I hope that it helps!!! Remember geling with the campus is key!

I was not an AEMES scholar (I actually have no idea what that is :-)) But I did go to an all-girls high school before I came to Smith. Women’s colleges were so not on my agenda after 4 years with just girls in high school, but I’m glad I made the effort to look past that at other schools.

Really, I think people who go to all-girls high school’s have the advantage at Smith. It’s a familiar environment for us and we know how to navigate it already. Plus, I’ve had lots of opportunities to make guy friends during off-campus study programs (JYA, study in DC) and summer internships, so I don’t think I’ve missed out on too much. Not to say that there aren’t days when I wish for a more co-ed environment, but overall I really think I made the right choice.

Plus, what I liked about going to all girl’s high school is that I got to compartamentalize my life. I didn’t have to deal with boyfriend issues and dating drama at school and I didn’t have to deal with school when I was dating, so I could devote full attention to each at it’s proper time. And I find that same thing at women’s college. I get school and friends during one period, and dating and boys during another, but I don’t have to have them all crashing in on me at once.

Anyway, thought you might like to hear from another all-girl’s person.
