If i join florida institute of tech. for B.S. Aerospace engg. (i have an offer from them wth a scholarship of abt 33% of total cost) I couldn apply to big schools due to some reason cz of which i cdn keep up wth the jan 15 deadline so i ended up applyin to rollind admission to florida tech fr spring 2012 n was accepted under the conditions stated above. I was wondering will it be possible to transfer to big schools MIT,Purdue,GTech n Univ of Michigan at ann arbor after 2 semesters only? And how good are the options of getting a better deal at scholarships or fin aid to a strong academic background, even at florida tech.My priority is financial aid, i cannot afford more than 8kusd a year. I am an international applicant so am worried about the costs because of the value of USD. Also how good an option is it to have a loan of 20000usd a year? gettin this much as loan will make florida tech affordaable fr me.

Are there any other schools i should look to for transfer like ucla or anything?
Please help, im really confused wth wt i shd do, mainly due to the costs at florida tech.

If you get into MIT, Stanford and several others, they provide full FA for the partition of the costs which you can’t afford yourself+your family. You don’t have to pay back that FA.

And for that reason, I would suggest that you seriously consider taking a gap year this year and applying to US universities with more generous financial aid policies. One year at Florida Tech with a $20,000 loan is bad, but survivable, but if you aren’t able to transfer anywhere, you would be stuck there, taking $20,000 loans each year. Transfers to MIT are quite difficult (more difficult than freshman admissions) – I don’t know about other schools with good financial aid.

@mollie
I’m not sure that taking a gap year is a possibility for someone in student visa.
As I remember, there is a minimum amout of days that the student has to attend, in order to maintain his/her visa status.

^Right, I mean taking a gap year this year, not attending Florida Tech, and applying to other universities as a freshman (assuming the OP isn’t already in the US). Sorry if I was unclear.

so wt u guys mean if i take a year gap MIT ppl won’t mind that? its like my situation is as such, so will it b a good idea to drop a year:
I graduated from my high school in May 2011 and i am from india. I have studied under the CBSE curriculum. Will i have any chance of gettin in if i apply this year for fall 2012? however i come from a politically unstable region and this has had its impact on the academics over here more so last year (my senior year), we could attend school only for about 3 months out of the 9 month curriculum due to prolonged violence. But our exams were to be held at a national level irrespective of our situation and ofcourse our school results deteriorated, although im in the top few in my school, the national rank isn very good. i could manage a mere 80.1% this year, however the exams bfre the turmoil i had 93%, 11th i had 92%,10th 95.8%(national exam again with a recognition of being in top0.1% of succesful candidates in the country) and 9th 94%. Recently i appeared for Phy SAT test and scored 760. will i have any chance of getting in if i apply since my final report of 12 is so low?

i have taken maths 4 years (2 years calculus senior n junior year), physics fr 4 years(2 years calculus based:senior n junior year), physical chemistry(modern chemistry), organic chemistry(college level) and programming in JAVA and My SQL for teh last 2 years at school.

i have above 90 for all of these except fr this last exam…n hw abt if i do go to florida tech n keep my appication goin on at MIT, if im accepted i leave florida tech n go to MIT as freshman without askin for any credit to the semesters at florida tech…n if i dn, im still in US n shd ve a better chance at graduate school for MIT?..or will i have probs if im accepted at MIT wth my visa, it willb F-1 for florida tech…

i know these are lots of questions but im growing anxious about my decision now.

No, you can’t apply as a freshman to MIT if you have enrolled at another university and are taking classes toward a degree, even if you don’t intend to transfer those courses. If you go to Florida Tech, you must apply to MIT and other schools as a transfer student, which is generally more difficult.

Generally, graduate schools will care whether you’re international or domestic by citizenship. It can be helpful to have gone to undergrad in the US, but it’s not an advantage simply to be living in the US when you apply for grad school.

Ultimately, you need to decide whether you want to go to Florida Tech for sure for $20,000, or take a year to have a small chance at MIT/other schools with better financial aid. It’s not an easy decision.

It is much harder statistically to be admitted as an international undergrad student to MIT than a graduate student. There is a pretty strict quota for undergrads because of the generous financial aid. The percentage of international grad students is much higher than the percentage of international undergrads. For transfers it is even worse.

Therefore I suggest you do not make any plans based on transferring to MIT as an undergrad. The odds are just not good enough. The situation is not as bad with UMich or Georgia Tech, because they offer limited or no aid to internationals. Frankly, if I were you I would take the offer you have at Florida Tech and wait for grad school to apply to MIT and other top colleges. $20,000 in loans per year for college is not bad at all. There is more aid for international grad students in the form of RAs and TA positions.

Even if hypothetically you were able to transfer from Florida Tech to MIT, you wouldn’t be able to transfer any credit (except possibly HASS.) So you wouldn’t be saving money anyway.
