Aerospace vs Mechanical Engineering

Hi all!

I’m a junior in high school right now, and I can’t decide whether I want to go into mechanical or aerospace engineering. I want to do something related to aerospace, but I’m worried about the lack of new jobs for the industry. I was thinking of going into mechanical, because I’ve heard mechanical encompasses aerospace and also has more fields, like the automotive industry, which I am interested as well. Which major would you guys recommend? Thanks

If you want something related, there’s nothing wrong with your logic. ME is a more versatile degree. If however you find the aero path the way you want to go after you get into your more advanced classes like fluid mechanics, you can switch (if your school has aero, only 50 or so do) or you could do an advanced degree in aero after a BS in ME.

By the time you get far enough along to be taking courses like fluid mechanics, it would be a lot tougher to switch without requiring extra semesters in school. You would be better off at that point using your tech electives to add in courses that approximate an aero degree (at least in the subfield of interest).
