Hey guys, I had a quick question about the AFA Summer Swim Camp. I’m def want to go to either USMA’s or USAFA’s summer swim camp, as I’m hoping to possibly try to swim there someday (I’m a jr in h/s). Anyone gone to either one?? How were they, or how are they different, what did you do etc? I can’t decide which one to go to! Any imput would be greatly appreciated! -Andrew-

I went to AFA's track camp last summer. I was a junior going into my senior year. It was a really great camp, and I'm pretty sure this applys for swimming too but its not a "training" camp. Since its only 1 week you can't really train, it taught a lot of technique. And if you are going to try to get in touch with the coach and possibly swim for them if you get in it's def. a great experience. I learned a lot, and the coach even had a meeting about recruiting athletes at the academy. I had a lot of fun, met a lot of great people that I still keep in touch with, and as it turns out, received a FF scholarship and will be attending Marion next year after which I will be at the academy! Hope this helps, if you want to IM me its airportsaresuper.

I was at the swim camp last summer. If you are from a low altitude, it will be a great altitude training camp for you. I got there thinking it would be a lot of technique and video work, but we did tough workouts every day. The morning was focused on technique, with each day focused on a different stroke. We got our strokes taped and anaylized with the coaches. After lunch, we did a dryland circuit, got back in the water, and did a workout depending on your specialty stroke. I remember being dead after every day.

Coaches are great, make sure you go to the camp that is for more advanced swimmers (one week is for age groupers, the next is an altitude camp for seasoned swimmers). I can speak from experience saying that the altitude makes a big difference at the end of the season at championship time. If you have any other question, let me know.

PS: Go to Air Force, we have the best swim team of the Academies

Hey yeah thanks, that really helps me with my decision. I'll probably be signing up for the advanced swim camp this afternoon. The only bad thing is that it will be directly after Illinois Boy's State. One last question. How did you guys do transportation to and from the academy? I'll probably fly out to one of the big airports out there, but then how did you get to the actual academy? Like did they pick you up, or did you just have to find a way? Advice on this would be very helpful. Thanks-

When I went for track and field(last year), I flew into Colorado Springs Airport. They pick you up. However, Colorado Springs is the only airport that they let me fly into, it may be different this year, but last year they only picked people up from Colorado Springs. They have a big bus and chances are you'll have someone else on your flight going to the camp too. They are right there waiting for you at luggage claim and its not hard to miss the huge sign they have.
