Affirm/question the cost of a GU (business) education

I'm looking for informed or experience-based insights regarding our situation.

I'm a parent of a GU admittee, not yet committed to attend. My daughter has been hell-bent on GU since she attended a local info session in our home state, and her subsequent research and campus visit this past summer. She intends to major in business. She's bright and motivated, having got early acceptance to GU.

She's been accepted at other schools, notably Boston College and, locally, the University of Minnesota, Carlson School of Management, a fairly strong business program, as well as a couple of other in-state private schools.

My question regarding "value" comes down to dollars for education and job prospects. With GU's need-based aid approach, we got a nice sized award package, but we still have a notable family contribution, comparable to the total cost of attending the University of Minnesota. However, even if my daughter is awarded additional outside scholarships, the GU cost for us remains the same, given the university's approach to deduct such awards from the school's aid package offering. Alternatively, those outside scholarships could be used to reduce the cost of attending the U of M, or perhaps the other private colleges (I'm not sure about those yet).

I'm a product of two private, catholic colleges, but I am playing the devil's advocate within my family and at least raise the question of the added value of the GU education and degree in light of my daughter and us needing to make some serious sacrifices and take on a big chunk of loans to make that possible.

Thanks for any input and insights!

Can you cite a source about Georgetown deducting scholarships from the financial aid package? I’m not doubting at you at all, I would just like to read it from Georgetown itself. If it’s as bad as it sounds, then I wont bother even filling out the scholarship applications (if I do decide to go to GU)

Most colleges let a student cut back on work study and/or loans before they reduce their aid grants, when there are outside scholarships. I know of one other college that specifically said they would reduce their aid grant if my state provided a higher grant than they estimated.

I’d also like to know what Georgetown does.

My daughter attends Georgetown and has an outside scholarship. In our experience, Georgetown used the scholarship to reduce work study and loans first. We chose to have the work study eliminated and reduced the loans. Given the adjustment to college and the pressure that she puts on herself, we felt that the added burden of work study was unnecessary. The financial aid office was very easy responsive. Also, she loves Georgetown and cannot imagine going anywhere else.

I honestly believe that when it comes to Georgetown you are not just paying for the education but also for their prestigious name which can benefit you a lot [mainly on the East Coast].

Also if I receive a grant from my state will Georgetown just lower their scholarship for me and have that grant replace it rather than having that extra money go to my pockets? I have a full ride so there is no option of cutting down work study and loans.

IMO - Gtown education well worth the money… I personally turned down a couple half-rides from schools like the alternatives you mentioned to come to Gtown… esp if you’re daughter wants to do business (namely finance), the Gtown network and access is well worth it…

Undergraduates: If you receive aid from Georgetown, then whenever possible your outside awards will be used to reduce or eliminate your student loan or student employment awards before any adjustment in your GU scholarship award is made. Entitlement payments like Federal Pell grants, GU tuition benefits, or VA benefits replace GU scholarship on a dollar-for-dollar basis. You can contact your counselor in the GU Office of Student Financial Services to discuss how outside or entitlement awards might impact your GU financial aid package.

The info about reduction in aid is from the GU web site, and is also confirmed by financial aid staff, of which dzleprechaun seems to be a part.

An update on our situation is that my daughter got a full ride with academic scholarships to attend the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. However, we are deciding to accept the cost to send her to GU. It is her strong preference for both a learning environment, compared to the U of Minn, and a geographic location. We aslo assume that, due to it’s location and it’s identity, there will be unique advantages or opportunities of which she can take advantage.

Just a clarification: I do not work for Georgetown’s financial aid staff.
