Affirmative Action and College Admissions

My classmate got into Harvard, Yale, Columbia, NYU, FSU, and a bunch of other schools. I applied to all the ivies and other selective/top colleges. I've always wanted to attend Harvard. It's my dream school. However I got denied to Harvard and to a bunch of other Ivy League colleges. My classmate and I have always been neck in neck in our class. We both take AP/honors courses and our gpa's are pretty close. I think she only got into Harvard and other Ivy League colleges because she is black and got in due to affirmative action. How does the Ivy League weight affirmative action against applicants like me(I'm Caucasian)

Minorities are favored in admissions. That’s just the way it is. It may be unfortunate or fortunate for certain people.

There may have been something in her application that really stood out that was not necessarily her race. There may not have been.

Ivy’s are really unpredictable in who they admit, but a there is a trend they prefer to admit certain minority groups.

AA may have played a part, but I seriously doubt that it carried her that far. Being a triple Ivy admit seems to me that she was simply an outstanding candidate.

Truthfully, her applications were probably just better than yours were. Being neck in neck in terms of GPA is completely meaningless, considering that most Ivy admits are in the top 1% of their class. Your essays & extracurriculars weren’t probably as good as hers were. Also, your individual personality may have not connected with the adcoms.

You said yourself she was fully qualified. Or were you not really qualified either? No two applicants are ever alike. You don’t know what her letters of recommendation were like, her essays, her EC’s perhaps. URM may or may not play a role for her, you just don’t know. If they were seeking more qualified black students this year then that could have been a plus factor for her, lucky her. It is ugly that you take it as something against you.

How is it that you have denial to a bunch of Ivies already?
