Affirmative Action Dead??

THIS IS FOR SYBBIE^^^^^ those with great grades and even decent grades go to the IVY LEAGUE leaving other great and competitive schools to pull from an even smaller group of African Americans

[/quote]

Not necessarily, because the majority of students in this country including AA's go to their state universities (this may be hard to see through the CC lens because this group is pretty much a self selected on that are looking at different schools and no where near representative of the admissions pool at large).

Some AAs with great scores, and SATs also attend the HBCUs because they many come from families who have also attended and many get a free ride (vs. having to pay something to attend the ivies).

Still others have to take the exonomically feasible route of going where there money can take them or where they can receive scholarship money.

the majority of black people don't atend your school (generalization) most live in areas like new Orlean, LA, NY, in bad public school system

I totally understand that the majority of blacks do not attend my school (as I am currently a PhD studtent at NYU and have also completed masters programs at Cornell and NYU :) ), however, my daughter whose SAT score was over 250 points higher than those you present and had a 3.97 uw gpa at one of the top NYC publics with A's in college courses at NYU and Barnard, 4/5's on her ap's received a large number of fly-in invitations, I told her that she would not be a shoo-in at Amherst.

Berkeley reacieved lots of apps from Blacks but those that could get in on grades and no URM hook don't want to go to Berkeley when they got accepted to Princeton, Stanford, Yale, Harvard etc.. Do you understand what i'm trying to say. In effect all African americans benifit because now I can apply to Berkeley and they know the 4.0's they accepted aren't going to come so they accept me because they know i don't have that Harcard option.

The overall process for being admitted to Berkely has not changed regardless of color. Even if those AA who choose to go to the Ivies or other select schools this still does not change your lot in life because your URM status does nothing for you at the UCs. Those who most likely did not attend berkley because they attended "more selective" schools, alos probably had higher grades and SATs than you are presenting.

You state that you are from a middle class family and both your parents are college grads, so no points from being a first generation, poor or attending a low performing school (for those whom much has been given much is required).

Did you recieve an ELC letter from UC which would essentially give you priority admission to the UC's. ? At the end of the day the UC's is still pretty much a numbers driven process and there will be many who bring better numbers to the table.
That is not to say that you should not throw your hat in the ring if this is what you want but don't toss all your eggs in one basket and cast a wide net.

All the best
