I hope not, because as bad as this sounds I'm banking on affirmative action to help me out at least a little, I know that sounds bad, but it's the truth and reality for many others. So do you think affirmative action could be in jeopardy for Virginia schools, especially UVA?
(this is enlight of 5 states, deciding on banning affirmative action)

BTW. How many minorities get in through affirmative action? ball park number?

I sure hope so. Why don't you work on making yourself competitive without affirmative action? How would you expect to keep up here? Or afterwards in your career?

Many, many URMs get in through preferential admissions. The exact number is hard to say, but I imagine it's high. The numbers needed to get in for a white/asian student would get a black student significant scholarship money at a top 25 university or even an acceptance to HYPSM.

It's not that we don't work hard enough, some of us do, I really don't get affirmative action, I get that they add diversity to a campus, but I know it's unfair to others, BUT THAT STILL DOESN'T MEAN WE DON'T WORK TO MAKE OURSELVES COMPETITIVE! Some of us do try our hardest, but can't seem to make the grades, it's our fault, BUT PLEASE DON'T SAY WE DON'T WORK FOR IT!

This is a pretty shallow thread if you ask me. Many of my friends at UCLA are black and hispanic, and I think they'd be ashamed to think that people in similar situations are banking solely on the color of their skin to get them into excellent universities.

Affirmative Action in the UCs has been banned since the 90s, and as a result no one questions who does and does not deserve to get in. We all know that everyone's here because they worked for it.

So do yourself a favor and try to figure out what you as a PERSON can bring the University of Virginia. They don't admit skin, they admit people. I think if you can answer that question honestly and then look at the quality of the student body and think that you've earned a spot there, then no one will ever question that.

Sit back and ask yourself, "Do I deserve to be a student at the University of Virginia?" If the answer is yes, then attend. If not, if the answer is "I will get in based solely on skin color," do everyone a favor, especially yourself, and do not attend. I am saying that because you will think to yourself for all 4 years that you did not get accepted based on merit, but based only on an arbitrary credential that does not reflect on you as a person. You will only appreciate your time on campus if you know that you deserve to be there.

Please, ignore your initial post and look into your own rational mind instead of into misleading forums.

There have been a lot of blacks over the years with superior credentials who were treated unfaily by whites and who lost opportunities to less qualified whites. A few years of turning the tables doesnt sound that unfair to me. Not perfect but hey, I'd take the advantage and not give it a second thought. Tough medicine, huh?

Remember when I was unofficially suggested for a moderator? I'm going to abuse that again right now: stop responding to this post. It's a flame, move on to bigger and better battles. We don't need to smear UVa's name

Even URMs need high stats to get into UVA. White/Asian students are more likely to be waitlisted instead because there are so many more of them.

Emek cbaddad, and Charming.....you all need to find some pride. When you quit relying on race to get ahead, you'll become a real man. You're a disgrace to all black people. Shame

Luked...great link on a very objective basis. The truth always wins

^ I'm hispanic tee hee =D, seriously chillll jumpseat, it's people like you, which make others intimdated to ask questions, because your a-holes, say you object, but don't call us a disgrace, because that just makes you a disgrace, to w/e race you are

Charming: "...as bad as this sounds I'm banking on affirmative action to help me out".

No need to be intimidated. Just that your 'banking' statement ends up coming across as so hypocritical. Cbaddad's is even worse (...turning the tables...). If you two were truly with morals, you wouldn't be wanting to do to others, the same wrongs that were done decades ago. So you're just lowering yourselves by gaming the system and using race as a deciding factor......when you claim to be against racism, (as am I).

Bottom line is.....you're rejoicing that others suffered racism, because now YOU can benefit it. Lucky me!

Charming probably doesn't realize that Hispanics actually don't have that huge of an advantage and if you're a transfer, Hispanics get in at lower rates. Read the other discussion about this. Sorry to break it to you Charming, but with that type of thinking, you are probably not going to get into UVA. You can't bank on being "Hispanic", UVA only accepts Hispanics who have done just as well as their white counterparts.

That was one of the worst examples of a counterargument I've ever read.

Let's make this easily understandable. YOU MAKE ALL URMS LOOK BAD

Edit - And yeah, by the way, it's true that being Hispanic doesn't help as much as you probably think. You'd be much better off being black. kthx
