Affirmative Action: Pakistani-Americans

Hi,

I was just wondering if Pakistani-Americans are one of the minorities that get an edge when applying to colleges.

I am looking mostly at Ivy leagues.

No, I'm pretty sure they don't get an edge.

annandale1, do you happen to go to annandale HS in va?

Can you pass for Latin?

AA normally benefits African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans and Native Americans. South Asians, if anything, are considered over-represented minorities, especially at some of the tech schools

hahahahahhaha. they dont consider you a pakistani. indians arent separated either. to them, you are an "Asian/Pacific Islander". and yes an overrepresented minority. ur at a greater disadvantage than whites.

the commom app has a place where you can write down what country you are from.. and people from pakistan do not fall under the asian/pacific islander category but indian sub-continent

Actually, normally colleges will ask for nationality if you are Asian/Pacific Islander. I bet that someone from a small Pacific island would be given a stronger look at (than a typical Asian) because of background, avaliable resources etc

taurustorus....are you an Atom too?

nope. but it would've been my base school. i went to holmes middle school and i now go to TJ. and i said "would've" b/c i now live in manassas. but yeah, unfortunately, what the other posters have been saying about azns being ORMs is true.

im indian, and the vast majority of apps didnt have a separate category for that. i found myself being an "Asian/Pacific islander" more often than not.
